I'm thinking ahead and trying to keep my eyes peeled for deals on a convertible seat (lo is 2mos). But in my searching, I've come across 5pt booster seats. So now I'm just confused. Will we need to purchase one of those too?

I'm headed to Target today to buy the Graco Headwise Myride 70. For the price, it's the best in it's class (and on sale today!). Up to 40 pounds reversed and 70 pounds forward facing, it'll be good until he's out of any type of carseat.

We are starting with an infant seat, but I've gotten several recommendations for the Britax Marathon 70. Pretty sure we'll be adding that one to the registry in order to get the discount later.

We have the britax marathon. 40 lbs rf and 70 ff so we won't need a booster. I think they are on sale on Albee baby right now.

I really suggest joining the fbook group car seats for the littles--there are a ton of car seat techs on there and if you give your car and your LO's weight/height stats, they can recommend a good one.

If you buy a convertible that lasts long enough (height/weight/expiration), you shouldn't need a 5 point booster. There isn't one convertible that's "best." I'd recommend seeing what will fit in your car, what will work for your LO's body type and what works in your budget. I second @hilsy85's suggestion of Car Seats for the Littles. They've got great overviews and would help with any specific questions too. FWIW, we ended up with a Clek Foonf and couldn't be happier.

We bought a Diono Radian RXT. We like that it can be rear facing for an extended period of time (up to 45 lbs) and ff up to 80 lbs. It's also narrow, so it'll fit in our captain's chairs in the second row of our SUV. ETA: It's $70 off on Amazon!

I have a 5 pt booster for my son, I bought it to replace a convertible that my son outgrew.
It turns into a belt positioned booster, which is typically the last kind of seat before they can use the belt alone.

Warning about the Britax seats, the weight limit is decent but the height limit is very low. Something to think about.
We have a Graco My Size 70, which is the same seat that @Dandelion: mentioned. They are called different names at different stores, for some reason (Headwise/My Size/Size4Me). We chose it for it's good ratings, good price and very tall rear facing height limit.

I know nothing about boosters but we have a britax pavillion. DS is a shorty though. He was 30 inches at 12 months.

We are getting the Foonf. It is super expensive but it was the Carseat Lady recommended for our car and linebacker of a child.

The myride 70 is rated one of the best convertibles to use from birth...even above other more expensive seats. I got it for this reason because I'm skipping the infant seat.

@Dandelion: I still don't understand how people can get away without an infant seat. I wouldn't have survived without it! Does your hospital not require to see the baby strapped in before leaving? We couldn't take R out of the room without her strapped in her seat.

If I would've known I think I may have skipped the infant seat. But -DS was over 9. Lb. at birth. We moved him to a convertible at 6 mo
