I'm thinking it may help with my stress and issues stress causes with me. I'm very inflexible and used to be an athlete but now I'm pretty out of shape.
Would I be able to do yoga or will I look like a clumsy fool if I'm not flexible?

You will look great!--but feel silly!--doing yoga. And nobody will give you a side eye for any reason whatsoever. I am not a yoga fan, but I lurrrrrve Pilates, and my yoga/Pilates classmates and instructors were always so cool and so welcoming.

Yoga is all about self-acceptance and non-judgment. You may not be very good at it at first but no one will care! Just go to a beginners class and you'll be fine

Do it! I started a little over 6 months ago and really like it. I was so nervous in the beginning I chickened out several times. It helps if you have a friend to go with, even if she is brand new too. If not, take the plunge by yourself. Everyone was super welcoming and not snooty at all.

@Mae: +1!!
I have a spinal fusion (aka my vertebrae are fused together due to scoliosis correction) and so I look totally ridiculous doing some poses--I literally can't round or arch my spine! And I find that yoga is still one of my favorite things to do...I feel so great and relaxed afterward, no matter how silly I look/feel. I think you'll love it! Good luck!

I think you'll be fine! Honestly, I don't think many people start yoga being super bendy...its something that comes with time.

Oh man. I'm too chicken to go to a class, but I learned from youtube and dvds!

I did yogilates for a long time and enjoyed it so much. It was such a positive way to wind down at the end of the day.

@matador84: @mediagirl: Pilates was like therapy for me while I was in law school. This thread has inspired me to find a class to attend! I miss it--and how great it made me feel about me--so much!

@MsLipGloss: I used to doze off in corpse pose at the end of every class. I always felt so centered!!! I miss working out and going to classes so much!

I love yoga. I do it mostly at home but its such a relaxing and mind clearing time for me. And it keeps me flexible. Who cares how you look?

@MsLipGloss: I miss my yoga class so much! DH got me a 12 class card for my birthday and I can't wait to go back after the baby.
And it really really does not matter how you look. If someone is thinking about how you look, it means their head is in the wrong place.

Thanks ladies! I'm looking for something close to home that I might be able to do in the evenings. Now you're getting me excited! I tried it once in the past but was so worried about me (and not farting tbh) so I never went back.

You just inspired me to look for a yoga studio I moved across the country about eight months ago and haven't done yoga since. I miss it!

Yoga is solo good. Especially for stress. You just have to remember to be aware of your own limitations and be ok with where your at in your body. Its very tempting to be in a class and look at others doing more advanced things, but trust that with time and practice your two will be a human pretzel:)

I was super self conscious when I started but I discovered that I like it so much and can tell my flexibility has improved even though it is still not great. You just sort of lean into the self consciousness and be ok with being new

Do it!!! Sooooo good. I just do it at home right now, but it does some really amazing things mentally and physically. I find I am more relaxed, feel better, have more energy, have gained physical flexibility, and have generally become more aware and loving of my own body. I feel it really builds your physical strength and spirit, and helps you to be more mindful of your corporeal self. I'm planning to write a post on how I've started including Ellie a few nights a week and how wonderful that has been for us.

@Mrs. Twine: Doing pilates made me appreciate my body so much more than just regular cardio/weight training ever did. Maybe it's because in yoga/pilates, you learn to celebrate the small victories (every millimeter you gain in flexibility, and every second longer you can manage say, in a plank), instead of focusing too much on the big picture . . . (the "I might have lost a pound or toned up a bit, but I'm still not *bikini ready*" sort of mentality).

@MsLipGloss: @spaniellove: @Mrs. Twine: @Mae: total rookie question but, do you get sweaty? Is it a "workout" in a sense? I ask because I'm curious if I could do a class before work and not shower after it?
papaya / 10343 posts
@mediagirl: really depends on the class. Usually I don't get very sweaty at all, but if it is a more difficult class for me I might. But even then it's not like cardio sweat really
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@mediagirl: I think you might break a light sweat in yoga (unless it's something like Bikram/hot yoga) . . . but not so much that you would need a shower (assuming normal levels of sweatiness!). You would likely sweat more in pilates, because there is more movement in pilates.

@mediagirl: I also started with youtube videos before I worked up the guts to go to a real life class. The beginning yoga for dummies video is pretty good!

Yoga is so good for stress reduction! Don't worry about looking silly. Everyone started as a beginner at one point! Enjoy. It's definitely my weekly me time.
honeydew / 7916 posts
@mediagirl: I don't think you'd get sweaty unless there was a heat wave outside and no climate control! Or you were taking some kind of intense class. But a beginner class under normal conditions, no.

@mediagirl: I did hot yoga for a while before I was pregnant. I was *so nervous* that I'd be the only inflexible, not-thin person there. I mean, really really nervous. But I made myself go and was ridiculously happy to see a woman weighing maybe 100 lbs more than me there--who was awesomly flexible by the way. I *was* usually the most inflexible person the first few weeks I went, but after while I started improving and new people would join and then I felt like one of the "better" ones.
You should totally try it out---it's daunting at first, to be sure (at least for me). But it was actually SO good for my body. I wish I could get back into it.

I used to do hot yoga regularly and I loved it. Regular yoga is ok, but I never really felt like it was a workout. But if you're doing it more for the mental aspect then it's great. I'm planning to get back into it once I'm done BFing.

@MrsSCB: I think you moved to the city I live in? I'll wall you with the name of the studio I used to go to. It's great!
