Teacher Bees...That question that people probably ask you all summer...When do you go back to school? I'm working today and tomorrow (getting my flex days out of the way early!) but our official first teacher day is Wednesday & students come back next Wednesday (Aug 14).

Our first day back is always the last Monday in August (PD and classroom set up) with the kids coming the first day after Labor Day.
I'm 33 weeks pregnant though so won't be going back until the 2014-15 school year...it feels a bit bizarre! Back to School is one of my favorite times of the year

Not a teacher, but just got a job in a school. I got back on the 19th, and the student's start on the 28th.

DH is a teacher, but he has to teach summer quarter... and although there is a 4 week break between quarters in June-July; he still has to work 40 office hours a week - sucks!

@rahlyrah: I'm sure you will be an amazing teacher! My biggest tip would be to build positive relationships with students AND parents asap. My first year I didn't realize how important having a strong bond with the parents was and it made things difficult later in the year when I had concerns about academics or behavior.

Get to know your custodian & the secretaries. I have always tried to be extra friendly to these folks because they do such important jobs to keep the school functioning properly.
@mrs.64 has a great tip too. As a high school teacher I don't have a ton of parent involvement (at least not so far!) but it is definitely important to establish positive relationships with students and parents. I'm sure I can think of more...but GOOD LUCK and hope you have a fantastic year. I had a great first year teaching and I'm sure you will too!

I teach in Canada. We go back the first Tuesday of September and kids start the Friday. It is staff meetings,pd and meet the teacher tues-Thursday.

@Katrocap: I'm in Canada so I get a year (Sept-Sept). Being off all summer while in my third trimester has even awesome...definitely timed this baby well, ha!

@char54: I have the same set up as you, it's been nice to be off this third trimester in the summer! I'm due next week. I'm going to go back after march break though and let DH take the rest of the school year off. I only have to be back to work for 12 weeks before having next summer off.
I didn't realize kids in the states go back to school in August! Do they finish the end of June?

@Delight We finished up at the very end of May & are starting back now. We don't get many days off besides Thanksgiving & Christmas though. It varies even within my state!

Teachers go back September 3 & 4. Students start September 9...late this year due to Labor Day and Rosh Hashanah in the same week.
ETA - I don't want to leave my baby. She'll only be 10 weeks old

Where I am in NH we start the 26th. Back to school is always such an exciting time! Hopefully I can power through this first trimester fatigue!!

Technically I don't report back until the 14th (with kids on the 19th), but I'm doing two trainings this Th & Fri.

@delight: U.S. districts start/end at different times. In Maryland we start in late August and end in early June.

DH is a teacher. He goes back on Sept. 3 and students start on the 9th. He's teaching summer school right now so his last day is Aug. 16th, so he'll have a 2 week break before going back to work.

I go back the 19th ( although I have a few curriculum days before then) and kids start on the 26th. I'm another one who loves back to school time, and I'm feeling pretty ready to be back into a workday routine (even if teaching can be super hard).
@rahlyrah I'm starting my second full year (I was a long-term sub for part of another year), and I would echo what others have said. Build positive relationships with support staff and parents; get to know the guidance counselors, nurse, school psychologist, etc. Find a mentor who you trust (this may or may not be a school-assigned mentor) so that you have someone to go to when questions arrive. Don't ever be afraid to ask for help if you need it. OVER PLAN. You're better off ditching activities than scrambling on the spot. Good luck! My first year was really hard, but really rewarding. I'm sure you'll be great!
