How often did you/do you give pain relief(tylenol or Motrin) for teething? Obviously I don't want to give it to her every night, but this is her first tooth so I am kind of clueless! I can feel the tooth and see a little bit of it popping out, so who knows when it will actually break through. She has been having more and more frequent night wakings, so I sm wondering if she's in pain? We had to give her tylenol for a vaccine related fever over the weekend and both nights she had her normal 2x wake ups. We didn't give it the past 2 nights because the fever is gone and she has had many more wakeups. I don't want her to be in pain, but I also don't want to just give her medication all the time! During the day she seems fine and we just use chew toys and cold toys.

Ugh, kinda have the same problem. I've been giving him motrin before bed and when he wakes (which is usually long enough for a second dose), but I hate giving it to him so often. He does seem to be in pain though, and I definitely don't want extra wakeups because he's hurting.
I really thought his teeth would have popped through by now -- I can feel the tops of them poking through.

If it seems like it is causing pain and keeping LO from sleeping, I give it. I like Motrin because it lasts longer. When LO had an ear infection I was nervous because we were dosing him every 6 hours for like 5 days straight, and the pedi said it was totally fine and there are babies who take motrin/tylenol every single day for medical conditions. So not to worry about regular dosing for a short period of time.

Motrin/Advil is so much better for teething. We will give it every night if she is in pain. Otherwise she doesn't sleep good and she needs rest.

If she's extra grouchy or fussy before bath & seemed to be extra drooly during the day I give her medicine. I only give it before bed, never during the day so I don't let it make me feel bad. She (& I!) needs rest!

@ellewoods84: I think its fine to give every night for a week or so. We only use tylenol until LO was over one year old and now we mostly gove Motrin since it lasts longer. DS (17mo) has been getting tons of teeth the last two months, there have been many days where I give him a dose of mortin before nap and one dose befor bedtime too. Just depend how comortable you are giving the meds...
We alos use Hyland's teething tablets, if you want to try something natural

@ellewoods84: Our daughter's doctor recommends using baby Ibuprofen for teething, because it's free of a lot of the dyes and stuff that's in Tylenol. With that said, we use Tylenol, because we bought it when she was little, and I want to use it before buying something else.
After this first tooth, you'll probably start to recognize teething discomfort (nights baby will need some teething tablets, or a frozen wash cloth) versus teething pain (when baby needs Ibuprofen).
On days when it doesn't seem so bad, I give her 2 droppers of Blue Poppy Herbs teething tincture every few hours. I think it really helps.
Do be very careful with administering acetaminophen (Tylenol). Your doctor should be able to give you the exact dosage and frequency of dosage allowed.

@gilmoregirl: yeah we are in the same boat! I keep thinking any day now, but its just waiting. So I want to give it, but not if this isn't the worst of it, ya know? But, we didn't give it last night and she didn't sleep well, so I will give it tonight and see if it makes a difference. I don't mind giving it if she really does need it! Hope you get some relief soon and those teeth come in!

@Mrs. Sunshine: yeah that's good advice. She's been super drooly during the day the past 3-4 days and quite fussy during bath. She does ok during the day though, so I am also only going to give it at night.

We bought Motrin, will try it out. I just only want to give meds if she really needs it. And we do have instructions from our ped about tylenol dosage. I will look into the herbs, thanks! -
Only if she is acting super out of character. I typically only dose before bed or in the MOTN if she is inconsolable. I will also sometimes give her a dose when we get to daycare if it was a rough night and she's running a low grade fever, because I don't want her being sent home with a teething fever! We try to limit it as much as possible, though. The days leading up to her tooth coming through were much worse than the night it actually cut.

@ellewoods84: poor babies. I thought we'd be past these first teeth now, because it's been like 10 days since they broke through. Ugh. I keep giving it because when I didn't he'd wake up crying and crying at like 4-5 am. But I can't predict ahead if he'll need it or not...

@gilmoregirl: I know, it sucks!! We have been having wake ups too at weird times with so.much.crying. I wish we could predict, but from everything I gather, it's okay to give it every night if they need it so I wouldn't worry!
