Awww cute! So DD usually wants her hair loose in the morning, but she doesn't mind if one of the day care teachers does pigtails later. The day care has a supply of hair ties for the little girls. They do the pigtails really tight so the bands don't fall off - which isn't great, but when I do them loosely at home they tend to fall off.

One time she came home with six pigtails. Took off her hat, and there they were

I do a whale spout on top of her head to keep her hair out of her eyes.

My daughter has fine hair and pulled out any rubberband or hair tie, no matter how tight. The tighter it was, the more hair came out with it. Most smaller bows would end up in her mouth too.

What ended up working for us was bows that were a bit bigger that she wouldn't chew on. My DD hates anything in her hair, so she has bangs for now. I'm hoping as she gets older she will let me put ponytails and bows in her hair. If not I'll grow out her bangs once she is old enough to keep her hair out of her face.

The teachers can definitely manage her hair though. Most girls in DD's class have some sort of whale spout or pony tail.

@PawPrints: Yeah, these were the ones we tried that led to the most hair being pulled out with them.

My kiddo is 3.5 and has had 1 haircut-- so her hair can be crazy if it isn't fixed (and was ALWAYS crazy when she was 1-2 and it was just starting to get long). My husband does mornings with her, and doesn't do hair-- so he'd just send her to daycare with wild hair. She learned to tuck it behind her ears

At that age, I would do a whale spout with one of those tiny elastics. They usually stayed in, more or less. I would also buy tiny barrettes to hold back the front of her hair. Daycare never complained and they either reclipped them in her hair or put them in her box if they came out.

We did a clip and the whale spout for a long time but she often came home without anything in her hair or we'd get a picture from DC with her hair hanging in her face She didn't seem to get the idea of putting it behind her ears even when it was long enough so finally we cut bangs and yes they are a bit of a pain but they are really cute too!
