Help! My 20 month old DD had a tick behind her ear tonight. We found it when giving her a bath, and have no idea how long it was there because we didn't give her a bath last night. The tick was super engorged and big.
My DH was able to remove it completely and we cleaned her ear off, but should I call her Dr. tomorrow / take her in?
so I tell everyone to keep them!
We try not to stress too much, but it's good to practice some general tick safety measures. We try to tuck in clothing as much as possible when we are in tick heavy areas, wear hats when practical, use Badger Bug Balm or a Bug Band, and as soon as we come inside our clothes come off and go in the drier on hot for about 10-15 minutes to kill any ticks that might be on/in them and we do a quick visual tick check and then hop in the shower to finish off. We don't do this every time we play outside all spring/summer long, but we definitely do if we know we will be where there are lots of ticks, and in the first part of spring when there are a gazillion all waking up hungry from winter. I'm sure she will be just fine, but it's good to be careful.
I had a tick bite that got the bullseye around it a few weeks later a year or so ago and nothing came of it. Ticks are such jerks to be out so early in the season!!!!
Doing a casual check after coming indoors and putting clothes in the dryer to get rid of lurkers if you find any on you is usually a pretty reasonable level of precaution.
