Would you?
We have a vacation scheduled in July to the beach. I'll be 33/34 weeks pregnant and it's an 8 hour car ride..

I would, depending on how comfortable you are pregnant. I also loved swimming in the ocean when I was pregnant.

@luckypenny: thanks! So the long car ride isn't an issue that late in pregnancy?
I went when I was 27/28 weeks with Chloe and it was a fun, easy trip. LOVED the pool. Scared of the ocean. Love sitting in the sand and reading!

As long as there is a hospital near where you'll be (just in case), sure!

@Mrs.Someone: is there? Yes.. But I'm not sure how I feel about delivering at the outer banks hospital.
Does that change your mind?!

I would! I would probably make sure to bring a copy of my medical records... just in case anything happens and I do need to visit another hospital/provider.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Well, in that case, I wouldn't make the decision until you're much closer to the vacation so you can tell how you've been doing. But having a hospital there just in case is better than nothing.

I'm 33.5 weeks now and I'd be down to go to the beach even with that drive, assuming it's to a city or town with a hospital near by just in case!

Maybe I'm lame, but that's a long car ride for that pregnant (congrats, btw!!) I would have been very uncomfortable. Can you go any earlier?

I just did a 4 hour drive at 32/33 weeks and was uncomfortable but it wasn't horrible...it did turn our 4 hours into 5 though and I was exhausted after! We had a 9 hour trip when I was 28 weeks and it sucked. It took more like 12 hours with stops and I was so uncomfortable! Baby was up in my ribs the whole drive. If you think you'd be comfortable I think it would be fine. But it will likely take you several hours longer than usual.

My doc didn't want me more than 2 hours away from her after 34 weeks. (But I also had preterm contractions starting at 26 weeks...). I would check to see what your doctor says.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I'm sure you'll be making plenty of pee stops so you'll get to stretch your legs some too

@Foodnerd81: we can't go earlier. My parents own the house and it's already rented all of June-September. My parents randomly reserved a personal week in July.
We ARE going for Easter & for two weeks in May (maybe?!) but it's more fun for C in the summer!

@luckypenny: pee stops AND if the price is right we might get a hotel one night to break up the drive.

Hate to be a naysayer, but I would not go. Granted, my pregnancy was somewhat fraught with complications that resulted in an unplanned induction, but I would not take any unnecessary risks at that point in the pregnancy (or at any other point in the pregnancy either . . . *gah*). 8 hours is just much too much, imo.

I'd go. I planned on traveling 6 hours at 36 weeks and my midwife was fine with it.

What beach will you be going to? I went to Myrtle Beach last summer at only 25 weeks and the heat and sun were pretty intense. We definitely had to scale back ask on some of our planned activities! If you make sure to not overwhelm yourself and try to stay indoors during peak sun hours, you should be fine and will have a blast! The water also felt great.
Also, if you wear a bikini, there's no such thing as too much sunscreen on your belly. Learned that one the hard way.

Which part of the outer banks would influence my decision somewhat too. If you're going to be near Nags Head, it's a little different than if you are somewhere more isolated.
FWIW, I'm taking a 2.5 hour car trip right now at 31.5 and I'm pretty uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to go any farther and I wouldn't want to travel much later in pregnancy but I do think it's an individual decision based on how your pregnancy goes and how you feel.

Ehh...since I had lo at 34 weeks with no warning I'm gonna go with no. It is pretty remote out there...

Also...that drive does not have nearly enough pee stops.

@babypugs: our house is right on the KDH/nags head border. Right by Ben Franklin!

@Mrs. Lion: hmm depends which way you go down... There are lots of stops on 295/95/64!

I had to do a lot of traveling around that time. It wasn't fun to be in the car for that long but it was doable. I'd just look at potential hospitals just in case
