We need to get Maddy a playmat but I don't know which one to get. I love the skip hop treetop playmat but it seems expensive to me!

I didn't use one! I always just laid on the floor in front of DS to keep him entertained. Have you tried looking at local second hand stores though? My friend found a mirror similar to the one her physical therapist uses with her twins, and it was only $2!

I never used one either, i always just put her on the floor with some oh her toys.

I got a hand me down one, but like others I usually just put her on a blanket on the floor. I feel like there's too much going on with the activity center thing we have, it over stimulates her.

I have a baby einstein around the world activity gym (got it as a baby shower gift). My LO loved it but we only used it until she was 4 months old. :T

We had the Baby Einstein Ocean Wonders one and ended up removing all of the toys and such that went with it and getting some toys that he actually liked and was interested in instead.

for our first DD we had the Tiny Love Super Deluxe Gymini with Lights and Music (I think that's what it's called!). I craigslisted it though because she grew out of it quick and we wanted more space. I think I should've kept it though because it folds up real small anyway.
Well for DD #2, we were Team Green and I wanted something a bit more gender neutral (not so girlie) so I registered for the Tiny Love Monkey Island due to awesome Amazon reviews. It's okay. I didn't like it at first because it only played music/lights up if DD kicks it. So at the beginning (from 1-2 months old), it wasn't that great because she didn't really know how to play with it. This is where I like the other one mentioned above better... It had continuous music and lights if you wanted that option. Anyway, at 3-4 months old it got better for her and I was able to put her down for longer increments of time and she'd be entertained while I did chores... But now she's almost 5 months old and rolling off of it... She's growing out of it so quickly! I might just put out a really large blanket with toys instead.
The Skip Hop one is really adorable though, I agree!!

I love the skip hop tree top play gym too, but ultimately couldn't stomach the price. We have this Infantino one that's less than half the price and does the job: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002DWALTI/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1322798915&sr=8-1
LO and I play on the floor on plain old blankets as well.

We have the Skip Hop. It is lovely to look at, but it has never done much for my son. He just likes being on a blanket with random toys.

We have a wooden bar that I bought that we can change the toys on. He hates laying on the floor so it's taller and works great over his bouncy chair...I'm glad we didn't spend the money on one either since his hates the floor.
The SkipHop one is super cute though! We bought a lot of the SkipHop toys

@Mrs. Bee: Sigh. I feel your pain. I can't wait for our dogs to pee on the activity mat we buy for our baby.

I have a silly question. What does tummy time mean? is it literally laying the baby down on his/her tummy?
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Mrsbells: from what I've heard you do tummy time so the baby has time off of their back. They sleep on their backs when they're young so their heads need time to take shape - so you don't have a permanent indent in the back. Also, I think it's good to work on neck muscles.

We have the fisher-price Luv U Zoo Deluxe Musical Mobile Gym, which I love for the gym aspect but we don't really use it for tummy time. My aunt gave my daughter a travel mat http://www.walmart.com/ip/Garanimals-Block-Books-Activity-Play-Mat/15257366?ci_sku=15257366&ci_src=14110944&sourceid=1500000000000003260330
Which I just lay on the floor and let her play on for tummy time with some of her toys. It's also great because it's really small so if you travel or are going on a day trip it's easy to just shove in your diaper bag, and it goes where you go.

Thank you all for the suggestions She's going to be getting skip hop toys for Christmas ( I adore the little owls! ) and we'll continue to use blankets on the floor for now.

I come to learn this was one of the things we could have definitely lived without! We had the tiny gym and the fisher price one. DD never loved to play with the toys and didn't enjoy tummy time. It was definitely just simpler to keep her on a soft mat or blanket and let her hang out with us. I should probably try to sell ours, but I keep thinking perhaps we can leave it baby #2 someday.

We registered for the Skip Hop mat, and I hope we get it. We already have the Skip Hop stuffed owl b/c one of my friends gifted it to us. I'd love to get the play mat to go with it. I think it's so cute!

We had a baby einstein one. I didn't use it much for tummy time (if he's on his tummy, can't really see the hanging toys), but there was about a month when it was GREAT for distracting him while I got ready for work in the morning or made dinner or whatever. He'd hang out on his back and reach for the toys hanging from the little arches. He definitely "played" with those way before he showed any interest in other toys.
