I have not heard that, and in fact my pediatrician recommended Tylenol after the shots.

I was just told not to give it BEFORE the vaccination because there was some reports it could interfere with the efficacy of the vaccine. But after the vaccine was fine and I was sent home with a dosage guide.

Vitamin D drops were suggested for EBF babies and I live in CA. Mostly the assumption is that babies can't be in the sun all that much because of their skin and it's literally one drop so no harm no foul.

Cosleeping is one of those things I think every doctor is supposed to discourage you to do but people do it all the time.

We were told not to unless absolutely necessary. It can lessen the immune response to the vaccine and decrease the effectiveness according to our ped.

We were told all of that stuff at a new parenting class that we took at the hospital.

I have heard that tylenol can weaken the immune response to vaccines.

I was told not to do it before and only after if baby is not acting herself. A fever is not reason alone to give Tylenol according to my Ped. But yes, they said it may interfere with vaccine response and also the Tylenol could mask a reaction.

As for Vitamin D, most people including adults do not get nearly enough vitamin D from the sun naturally regardless of climate, especially if you're wearing sunscreen as you should.

I think both of those are very common and evidence based recommendations, so I don't know that it's reason to leave a pediatrician over. It's not like they're saying something way off base. Obviously if it's not a good fit for your parenting that's another thing.

Our pediatrician says to just give tylenol as needed with the vaccines, and has never said anything about it reducing the effectiveness of the vaccines. We are in the LA area and our pediatrician also recommends vitamin D drops when breastfeeding, although she does allow for some flexibility with sunlight, but as @catomd00: said, a lot of people don't get enough regardless of climate. People generally try to keep babies in the shade too, so I could see that. That's something I'd let slide, if she absolutely doesn't agree, and has read up on it, then whatever. As for cosleeping, maybe not the best delivery, but the doctor is advocating for the patient, even if that means telling the mother something she doesn't want to hear. If your friend doesn't want to take that advice, fine, but that's the doctor's job.

@Torchwood: I'm pretty sure SIDS is the number 1 cause of infant death. I imagine the doc was referring to that - the whole "back to sleep" campaign has been drilled into us at every appointment. I'm not opining of the safety of co sleeping, and it's doesn't sound like the pediatrician had the best delivery or is a good fit, but I don't think her recommendations are outside the box.

It's probably rare to find a pediatrician that is going to promote cosleeping.

2) should have focused on safe co-sleeping

3) all EBF babies should get vitamin D. There's no way they're getting enough sunshine without getting sunburnt to reach adequate levels. I'm not sure why your family is upset about this one.

I do feel weird like I'm secretly hiding my cosleeping as if it were illicit or something. That bothers me. But I've never felt more sure that cosleeping is right for us. So I just don't bring it up.

We just moved and my DH is pretty lukewarm on our new pedi. I wish we lived in my old hometown because I LOVE my sister's pedi (she's 15). It's so hard to find a great doctor!

@Madison43: @ash: agree with you both.

My pediatrician did tell me this but understood that it can be given if the fever is high enough.

We didn't need it for the 3 month shots but DD needed Tylenol for the 4 month shot. After being told high fever cause seizures in the ER, I decided the fever was not going down by a cold wet towel and I gave her Tylenol.

I was told in the ER, the quickest way to reduce a babies temp is to put a damp towel underneath their armpits. I would do that to see if it brings the temp down.
