I've seen it done a lot. Also, mothers maiden name as first name. This is really common in the South.

I kept my last name when we got married and I wanted it to be a part of LO's name. So her middle name is my last name and her last name is the same as DH's. There was a little confusion at first, and honestly by putting her full name on the birth announcement I think we caused some of the confusion. Now though we hardly ever use her middle name unless doing official paperwork so no issues.

@Applesandbananas: If your maiden isn't part of your name I think people will just see it as a nice nod to your family/name. I don't think you'll have any issues with that.

My maiden name isn't a good first or middle name, so no. However, if it was, I would totally do it! I think it's nice/honorary!

We considered it because my maiden name is used as a male first name, but we decided to use our dads' names instead.

Same as @catgirl and @windswept. DH doesn't care for middle names anyway, and I wanted DD to have both our last names somewhere in her name, so it was a pretty easy decision. She might be put out someday that she doesn't have a "normal" middle name, but hopefully she'll get over it. Or choose one for herself, even if it's not officially part of her name, haha.

So there is a Filipino thing

It's very common to
1. When having a child - Give the child the mom's maiden name as the middle name
2. When a women gets married she changes her original middle name to her maiden name

I believe they actually got this from being conquered by the Spanish.

I could be wrong but this is what I learned by working with Filipino people and having Filipino extended family members.

Also I want to add everyone I know with mom's maiden name as their middle name has never had any issues or complaints about it. But it's pretty common here so maybe they just think it's normal? Haha.

@Applesandbananas: Me! Well, "maiden name" I guess in quotations bc I never changed it myself. It's definitely DS's middle name and not a second last name. It was a good choice for us even though sure, it's unusual (not a typical first name or anything like that)!

I really like this idea depending on the name. My maiden name wouldn't work for a boy or a girl but our LO has my dad's first name as his middle name. I like middle names with family ties.

I have my mom's maiden as one of my middle names.
My daughters have my maiden as one of theirs.

It's never been an issue for me. I assume it won't be for them.

Yep! LO has my maiden name (or at least the part I like - I had a hyphenated name, ugh) as her only middle. We'll probably use the same middle name for future LOs too unless we decide it seems weird.

I think it's fine in your case. I, however, would not punish LO2 with my long Russian maiden name that I couldn't wait to trade in . That in conjunction with DH's even longer Italian last name would just be cruel, lol.

If we have a boy, he'll have my last name as his middle name. I don't think it works well for a girl though. I obviously like the idea!

Yes, both kids have my maiden name, which is very Asian. Their first and last names are common boy names, and no one thinks their middle is part of hyphenated last name.

My sister did this with all 3 of our nieces, which is nice because our last name ended with my sister and I I chose to give my DS my dad's middle name. It's nice to honor family somehow if it works out!

We will for one kid, I think! My maiden is a top 100 girl name. We could use t for a first, but it's not totally my style.

If this one is a girl, I think I'll do middle name for my sister. If we have another girl, maybe she will get it? I love the idea!!

My MIL practically begged me to give LO my last name as a second middle name, it's what she did with her kids. I never changed my name when I got married and can't change it so I thought it would sound like I'm trying to give her two last names. My last name is very much a last name.
