If you go on vacation with your parents or in-laws, how do you pay for the trip (do you split it, do the parents cover it, etc), and how do you decide what to do/where to stay?

DH and I vacationed with my parents once, and we all went on a cruise. They paid for our cruise, so we didn't mind letting them decide where we would go or the room we stayed in (we had our own room, of course).

This summer, DH and I and his siblings are staying in a beach house with his parents. Everyone is splitting the cost of the rental equally, so I feel like it's making it more stressful to decide where we're staying, because everyone wants what's most important to them. FIL wants a house right on the beach, SIL wants a king-sized bed and private bath, BIL wants a place close to restaurants/bars, and DH and I want the most kid-friendly house, because we're the only ones with kids. It seems like no choice will make everyone happy, and people don't want to compromise, since they are paying a good chunk of money for the house. Just curious to hear how other people work this out.
