So I just need to vent about this because I'm both peeved and worried.

I have chronic ITP (Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura), which is a condition of having an abnormally low platelet count. Normally, you have a platelet count between ~140,000 and ~350,000. Mine have always been under 100,000.

When I got pregnant, I immediately scheduled an appointment with my hematologist, because I've heard that pregnancy can cause your platelet count to drop even lower, and I've also heard that you can't have an epidural or a c-section if your platelet count is too low. At the time (7 weeks), I had a platelet count of about 100,000 so my hematologist wasn't worried, and he told me he'd inform my OB to keep an eye on it and I'd have a follow up in six months.

Well, six months past and I visit the hematologist again. I haven't had any worrying symptoms, so he's not concerned, though we do realize at this time that my OB office HASN'T been monitoring my platelet count at all throughout my pregnancy. Oh well. So my hematologist has my blood drawn to check my platelet count and it's down to 40,000!!!!!

For those that are wondering, 50,000 is usually considering the MINIMUM for a c-section, and many anesthesiologists want it to be even higher for an epidural (I don't know why).

My hematologist, being the totally chill guy that he is, doesn't seem too concerned, but he wants my OB office to check them again at my next appointment (this week). If they are still low, I'll supposedly need to start taking steroids to boost them before delivery.

But I'm FREAKING out. I'll be 36 weeks, and if I can get my OB office to take my blood, it may be another week before they get the results to my hematologist. If my platelets are still low, I'm not sure if 3 weeks (or less) is even enough time for steroids to boost them up! And even if they can boost them up, can they boost them up high enough for me to get an epidural (something I've been BANKING on since I got pregnant)??

I'm just peeved that my OB Office hasn't been monitoring my platelets throughout my pregnancy. They know I have ITP, but they haven't done a damn thing about it. How is that okay?? I guess I should've been more on the ball and asked about it, but I thought maybe SOME of the NUMEROUS TIMES they've taken my blood throughout the pregnancy, they actually would look at my platelet count, but they haven't! And I have nooooooo idea what happens if my platelets drop even lower! UGH!
