There were four kids in my family and three of them played piano and violin... I wouldn't go so far as to say the family was musically inclined though, since not everyone was at the same skill level. Still, it made for some common ground in family focus and conversation.
Not aware of any musical background in my parents or grandparents, so maybe the focus on music in my generation was a fluke!

Yes. My parents met and married while in the Army band. My father can pick up and play pretty much any stringed instrument, as well as any brass (he played trombone in the band). He also has a great singing voice and has, for years, headed and/or participated in church bands and choirs. He normally sticks to a guitar and, but also regularly plays the banjo and mandolin.
My mom can't sing, but she can play the flute, clarinet and oboe.
My brothers can all play guitar, and my oldest brother can also play the banjo.
My uncle sings in his church choir, both of his daughters have beautiful voices and the younger is a high school music teacher/choir director and heads the music ministry at her church.
My dad's sister also has a gorgeous singing voice and plays a ton of stringed instruments.
I never had the discipline to learn to play an instrument, aside for playing the flute for several months. I always wished I had learned to play guitar and/or piano (I guess I still could?) I can carry a tune okay, in a limited range, but I'm nothing special.

I would say some of us are - my dad sang with the Texas Boys Choir growing up, both my sisters and I played the piano, and my younger sister and I were in the band in jr high/high school. My younger sister was also in choir and currently sings for our local symphony.

Nope! I'm the only one in my family to stick with an instrument. Everyone else played one at some point, but quit after a few years.

No. I'm the only person in my entire extended family to ever stick with playing an instrument (I'm good at clarinet and can muddle through on saxaphone, flute and trumpet), and I did a lot of musical theatre growing up, and am told I can sing, but realistically I think I can carry a tune, but nothing to write home about.
I want to learn to play the guitar though. I had a teacher that could play and she'd bring it to the class camp out and we'd sing around the fire, and I always thought it was so awesome.

Yes, we all played instruments and so did my mum and her siblings. My gran played piano and sang in a choir and her dad was a conductor in an orchestra and professional pianist. No music on my dad's side though.

My dad is. He has probably 20 different instruments and is able to play them all. My mom also plays the piano beautifully. I sing in the shower like a freaking star.

My parents were really into music but neither of them played any instruments. Both my sister and i are musically inclined though.

My mom's family is. Her sister was a minister of music in her church, and my mom sang in a gospel group when she was younger. My brother and I were both in band in school.

Actually yes. Both of my parents are professional musicians. Singing and jamming and playing songs together is one of the ways (only ways) we all get along.

Yes, most of us. My grandmother, mom, and aunt didn't really get the musical genes, but pretty much everyone else did on both sides. DH's family is very musically inclined as well. I love it!

I have 2 brothers. My oldest brother played bass guitar, my middle brother played saxophone and I played violin.
Everyone in DHs family plays, usually more than one instrument.

Not in the slightest! My youngest sister took some guitar lessons in high school, but abandoned playing as soon as the class was over. I've never had an interest in learning to play an instrument.

Yes. My dad sings and plays guitar (and was in a bunch of bands when I was younger). I sing and play around on the guitar and ukulele. My brother sings and plays a little piano (not much). My mom isn't really musically inclined, but she can dance! : )
Further back in the family tree, my maternal grandfather plays guitar and sings and most of my paternal family in Tennessee plays guitar or banjo and sings. Most of my maternal family in West Virginia sings up a storm. Lots of musical mountain folk!

Nope, I was the only one who played (and stuck with) an instrument. When my dad turned 50, he learned to play the guitar and ukelele, so I'm not the lone musician anymore.

My dad and his 3 sisters all play the piano. My mom's sister went to college on a violin scholarship. I play the piano, clarinet, and bass clarinet. But none of my siblings play.
DH's family is much more so. His dad plays guitar, he plays bassoon, alto sax, and tenor sax. His brother can play flute, clarinet, trumpet, and drums, and his sister can play the clarinet.
Our kids don't really have a choice - they'll be in band!!

My brother and I are. I played piano & clarinet. He plays guitar, piano & saxophone. He was in a band in high school & even recorded a cd!
We used to have jam sessions. He got a new acoustic for Xmas & we played the starting line together. I miss those times!

I think so. My mom plays the piano (better than I ever did) and all 3 of us kids were fairly good when we studied at it. We all have a good sense of pitch and rhythm and I was able to pick up the violin and guitar with relative ease. I tried the drums at one point but I found that a lot tougher.
I'm hoping my LO picks it up!

Not at all...my parents are borderline tone deaf and my brother and I can barely carry a tune. My LO loves to sing but has a singing voice only a mother could love...I hope she continues to love music and learns an instrument like violin or guitar

My brother and I both played violin from a young age but no one else in our family ever played anything or sang. My mom worked and thought it would be good to have a structured activity to bond with us over (we learned via the Suzuki method which emphasizes parent involvement) so that was the initial motivator, not love for music as such. I was only okay, but my brother was amazing! My niece is starting piano soon and I'm so glad-- she loves music and learns song so so fast! Both my bro and sil are very musical and it's rubbed off
