When your water broke, was it a big gush like in the movies? Or was it just a little bit of leakage? I've felt a little extra liquid come out today, but I don't want to go to the hospital and feel like an idiot. I was dilated to 3 on Monday. I'm 39+1 today.

My water broke before I went into labour. At first I thought it was a lot of watery discharge (slow leak) but within the hour it was soaking a pad and by the time we drove to the birthing center, I could feel gushing every time we hit a bump.

Mine wasn't a trickle or a gush, but a bunch of little gushes....at first I thought maybe I peed a little and went to the bathroom, but it seemed like more than just pee...then it happened again a few minutes later and I was like nope, there's no way there was that much liquid still left in my bladder. I was only 34 weeks so my OB had me come to L&D immediately. It continued to leak in small gushes all the way to the hospital and by the time I got there I was completely soaked. I looked like a hot mess walking into the hospital haha.

Mine didn't break till I was already in the hospital (the doctor broke it for me).
eta: I forgot to say--it was a LOT of liquid though. A LOT

Mine didn't break until I was well into active labor. I had just been admitted and they were monitoring contractions in the hospital bed and it broke in a big gush, no mistaking it at all. Continued to have smaller gushes with each contraction for a while. When I told the midwife it had broken she was like, are you sure, and I just laughed.

Mine was just little gushes at a time. I woke up early in the morning with the first one, and it kept happening all day. I was only 35.4 though, so I wasn't sure it was my water.

I felt a small pop while I was laying down. When I stood up it felt like I peed a little. It was never enough to soak my pants but I did go through a couple large pads by the time we got to the hospital. The big gush didn't come until hours later when I was getting my epidural. I soaked the nurses shoes

Call your doctor, if you're 39 weeks, they will likely want to check you out just to be safe.
I had a similar experience to @Mrs. Lion:
At first it was a small amount of liquid, then a little bit more, then a little bit more, and a little bit more. Once I started having contractions, it was more of gush, and by the time I got to the hospital, I was sitting on a soaked towel. -
Mine started as a couple of trickles when I stood. Then while I was sleeping I felt more of a pop (it woke me) when he moved (I think he kicked it) and a small gush. After that every time I moved in bed I felt a gush.
I was in the hospital being induced but it broke on its own after the pitocin.I think if it keeps trickling in the next few hours you should get checked since they don't want you to go more than 24 hours with broken water. If it wasn't your water, I'm sure they see it all the time! Better safe than sorry.

With my first it was an audible pop and then a big gush that wouldn't stop and just kept soaking through everything. With this one I woke up feeling wet and there was quite a bit of clear mucusy liquid in my underwear but then nothing else came out. We went to L&D to have them check it and I really expected it to be a false alarm since it had stopped! It's a super quick swab test, they may even be able to do it at your OB.

I had rolled over in bed and I felt a 'pop' like a water balloon had burst inside. I stood up and it was a huge gush like in the movies. (I also felt my son's entire body drop down to my pelvic bone when all that liquid was out of me!)

@HappyBaker: you did hear it, right? I was alone and swore I could hear it pop - like cracking your knuckles or something. So weird!

For both LOs, my water broke before I had any contractions.
With LO1 I was sitting on the toilet peeing and then I heard a pop and a huge gush of water came out (luckily right into the toilet!).
With LO2, I was trying to get comfortable sitting on LO1's bed, and all of a sudden a gush of water came out.

I'm no help... I was on epdural already when they broke it so I had no feeling whatsoever! It seemed like s big gush bc nurses were rushing up to clean?!

It was enough that I was certain my water broke, but I don't think anyone would've gotten splashed if I was standing lol (happened when I sat down in the hospital bed).

@CatchAFallingStar: A very slow leak. I was in complete denial and ignored it for 7 hours before I called my OB! Haha. If you're not sure then lay down for a while, when you get up you will feel a little gush.

@rachiecakes: I heard / felt the pop when mine went in bed! I didn't get an immediate gush but I gushed on and off all day once I got out of bed.

Mine never broke! Doc accidentally broke it when checking me right before delivery.

Mine started as a couple small leaks, starting when I stood up from my chair at home. I called the hospital and they said to come in. I started to get some bigger gushes on the way and then the biggest one came while I was sitting in the waiting room to be checked out! Ha, I was so embarrassed to get up and go waddling to the exam room.

Mine didn't break until I got the epidural and was about 8 cm. I felt a big gush and thought I urinated due to feeling numb from the epidural - ha!

A huge snap and a burst. Like an explosion as soon as I stood up. Dh jumped a mile back and it splashed on his shoes. My dr warned me mine would be a lot since she saw a huge sac in there at my 34 week scan.

Mine broke during the first practice push of my induction. A huge amount of fluid shot out and soaked a nurse.

I was in pretty active labor ... I was on hands and knees on our couch, and it gushed (like in the movies). Baby was born 2 hours later.

A bunch of small gushes. It was a slow leak, so it would gather and then gush any time i sat for a bit.
Gross, but smell your undies. If it smells sweet, it definitely your water.

I heard/ felt a pop when I got in bed and when I stood up, there was a ridiculously huge gush.

mine was a movie style huge gush when it broke! you can get amniotic fluid tests at the drugstore if you really don't want to bug the doctor. I would go in, though.

@rachiecakes: I totally heard a pop the first time, with one big gush and then a trickle. The second time I just woke up soaked, with continuous small gushes for the next couple of hours.

I felt a little pop while laying down, then when I got up, it leaked all over me. Not a huge gush, but very obvious to me anyway.

at 37 weeks I was in target, i sneezed and felt a gush. I called the doctor and was told nope you just peed your pants
at 38 weeks I got up at 5am to pee, stood up and felt a trickle down my leg, a few minutes later, a little more. Called the Dr and they sent to to L&D which confirmed it was my water and kept me since i was 4cm but no contractions meant i was to be put on pitocin.
all day i leaked a little here and there, then around 5pm i felt and heard (!) a pop and big gush. after that the contractions were definitely more intense and painful. I asked for the epidural and she was born about 5 hours later

Mine broke in the hospital but it was only a slow trickle. After a few more hours of labor not progressing the midwife had to push baby back in to release the rest of the water. That kickstarted delivery.

It was a gush both times. But, the first time, it started out as a small leak.

@rachiecakes: I was also alone but swear I heard a pop and then as I got up out of bed there was a huge gush. I wasn't having contractions or anything at that point so it took me completely by surprise!

Mine broke when the resident was doing a cervical check... All over her and the nurse with her! I had just gotten my epidural, but still felt it. Mine broke with two big gushes. If I'd been standing I can only imagine that it would've been just like the movies.
I wonder if it matters how dilated you are at the time it breaks? I was 8 cm and has been in labour about 14 hrs.

@CatchAFallingStar: I also was in bed, rolled over to find my ringing cell phone and felt/heard a pop and had a small gush up my back. I hadn't gone to the bathroom before my nap and totally thought I had peed myself. When I got up to go to the bathroom, I had small gushes with almost every step and saw that I had lost my mucus plug when I wiped. It continued to gush a little when I walked for the rest of the evening (around the house, to the hospital).
Water broke at 6:15, C was born at 33w5d the next morning at 10:27.
I definitely said to the nurse in triage that I wasn't sure if my water had broken or if I had peed myself and she laughed and said that they get a lot of that, and that at least I was prepared to hear that it might be the case that it was my bladder and not my baby. Ha!
Just know that if your waters have broken, if you get it checked, you're there for the duration. The 24 hours window from water breaking only really applies if someone checks you - inserting instruments / hands / swabs to check brings the infection risk. I had to go immediately because it was definitely too early for labor, but if I'd been full term I would have chosen to wait for close contractions to go so that I wouldn't be stuck in a room / on a monitor and not allowed to shower or eat. Make sure you shower & eat before you go!

It was broken for me (I was induced) but it was a huge gush and so much water. I was soaked and they changed my sheets 3 times. I hated it, just sitting in it waiting for them to change.

Mine was a huge pop just after I got my epidural in the hospital. Then a gush. I've read you are supposed to squat over a paper towel to check and if more that a drop or two come out after a minute or so go in.

I was already at the hospital and in active labor when my water broke. It was a movie like gush! Didn't stop for a couple of minutes. In my labor haze I was totally embarrassed haha!
