We had a long conversation this week regarding big babies in a training I was in. Being that I was the only pregnant person in the room, we discussed my first baby's weight and the expectation for the 2nd.
I just wanted some real life information to compare it to. So if you have had 2 children, what was the weight difference between #1 and #2.

I've seen so many women have a 2nd baby who is smaller than their first. I unfortunately don't have any experience to add here, but I will say I think my 2nd will be lighter in weight, only because I have heard that how much the momma gains and the further she goes in her pregnancy has a small impact. Well, I gained too much with my 1st and went overdue. So, I don't think that'll happen again, but who knows. I also don't know how much of that factors in.

@CupQuakeWalk: I am a doula and every birth I have attended so far of mamas with two babies (I think it's 8 without looking it up. I have mostly partnered with 1st time mamas) have all been larger. Regardless if mama has gained more or less weight. Although I also have dealt with anyone who has gained too far out of the normal range. Hence asking my question here.

@junebugmama: wow! So, I guess it goes either way because so many have smaller babies that I have experienced. Maybe there is absolutely no science to it.? But yes, I do think your theory does make sense because I remember my doctor telling me, as I quickly gained weight that overall weight gain of the momma *does* slightly impact baby.

I think for my mom that's true because my you get brother was much bigger then I was but I think my sister (her third) was more my size.

My mom went
#1 (me) 9lbs9oz (due date)
#2 8lbs 14oz (2 weeks early)
#3 9 lbs 2 oz (1 week late)
My MIL had her biggest first and then each subsequent baby was smaller than the one preceding it.
Everything I've heard from doctors is opposite, that babies get bigger because your body gets better at growing them.
I'm hopeful that I follow my mom because I am not interested in any more ten pounders.

my mom went:
me: 8.6 and she was 25
sister: 8.4 and she was 24
brother (but she had GD): 10lbs 11oz and she was 37 <<but then again, she says she never in her life gained more than 20lbs with any 3 of her pregnancies

#1 8 lbs 6 oz (due date) weight gained = 45 lbs+
#2 4 lbs 15 oz (35 weeks) weight gained = 22 lbs
But even if I had gone full term, I don't think #2 would have been as big as #1. I just gained a lot more weight the first time around!

Gah just asked my mother and mother in law
I was first at 9.9, my sister was 9.15
My husband was first at 8.6, next his sister 10.2, and brother was 11.12!!! Holy crap! (my husband is the biggest adult and his brother is scrawny…also interestesting)

I think it all just depends. With SIL #1 my niece was average but nephew was big!! SIL #2 nephew 1 was over 9lbs and nephew 2 was very bigger!

DS was 6 lb 14 oz and I think this one will be bigger! I am carrying completely differently. Will find out soon!

My mom gained 25 lbs with me and I was 6lbs 4 ounces and 8 days late
My sister was next. She gained 20 lbs was 5 days late and my sister was just under 7lbs.
With my brother she didn't gain quite 20 lbs. he was 4 days late and about 7.5lbs.

My info is probably irrelevant: DS was 6.5 lbs at 32 weeks and S was 9 lbs 15 oz at 39 weeks. I'll get a rough estimate on this LO on tuesday.

Pretty big difference but I attribute it to boys being bigger.

My mom had both of us right around her due dates. I was 7 lb 2 oz and my younger sister was 7 lb 8 oz.
I'm interested in this because my son was 8 lb 13 oz (I had GD). I gained 24 lbs (I only gained 5 lbs from month 7 on, when I started the GD diet).

DS1 - 7lbs 11oz (38 weeks 4 days) - 45 pounds gained
DS2 - 9lbs 10oz, though another scale said 10! (40 weeks 2 days) - 18 pounds gained
No GD with either.

This scares me! I was 10 days past due when I was induced and had nearly a 9lb baby. It was a rough recovery and I would like to skip that for number two!

My mom:
1st (me): past due date, forceps delivery 7lbs 6oz
2nd (my bro): on due date, born within 30 minutes arriving at hospital: 10lbs 2oz
I'm scared my next will be bigger and be born in the car, lol

I don't have two yet but I know that for my mom, I was 8lb2oz and my brother was 9lbs+. I was born the day after she was due, my brother on the exact due date.

Mine were almost the same weight. My second (my girl) was just a few ounces lighter and baked just about 5 days more than my son.

6 ounce difference between one and two! 8lbs 7oz. and 8lbs 13oz.
My mom had 4 daughters and each were a POUND more than the last so 7, 8, 9 and then me, 10 (ouch)

#2 was a pound smaller, but 4 weeks earlier. She would have been a pound bigger if she came on time.

Gained same amount of weight for those two pregnancies (around 45 lbs!).

We are expect LO#2 to be bigger than #1. DS was tiny, born at 39 weeks 5lbs 12 oz. So far this LO is measuring right around average at 28 weeks (bigger than DS was at the same point).
For my mom, we progressively got smaller. My oldest sister was over 9 lbs, middle sister around 8.5lbs and I was just over 7.

My son was 7lbs 6oz at 37 weeks. (I gained about 35lbs)

My first daughter weighed 7lbs 13oz and she was 1 week "over due" second weighed 9lbs 5oz and she was 2 days "over due"

#1 - 5 lbs 13 oz, 38w + 4d, diagnosed with GD at 28w
#2 - 6 lbs 1 oz, 39w + 1d, diagnosed with GD at 18w
My weight gain with both was minimal (about 15 lbs) due to my diet restrictions. Doctors were not concerned about DS1's weight and measurement in ultrasounds but very much alarmed with #2, which required constant monitoring. I'm petite and just make small babies. Doctors didn't like my answer, but it's the truth. Both were healthy newborns.
