Were you in a sorority? (frat)?

Nope neither of us, we weren't really the type of people to go Greek. My school didn't have it, but I wouldn't have done it if it did.

Yes! DDD but I went to a small private school so it was a great experience. I graduated 4 years ago but have stayed in touch with many of my "sisters" and consider a few of them my very best friends.

I was in a traditional sorority, but they didn't have on or off campus housing. There was one huge building with suites for each sorority that had a foyer, meeting room, and kitchen. It was fine, but I dropped out after 1.5 years.

I was also in an academic frat (math) and a service frat.

Nope. Neither of us were in the Greek system. Just not our thing. I had friends in a sorority, and loved hanging out with them all, but I just didn't feel a need to join one myself.

Me: No. There were frats and sororities at my school, but the sororities were non-entities. The frats were much more visible and threw parties.

DH: He was in a frat and is still friends with many of the guys he met while participating. He doesn't really talk about it much though. I think he joined to have an easier time making friends.

@Mrs. Taco: What!?! What school did you go to? I was a transfer (Junior year) and rushed!

I was Greek but my husband went to college back home in Poland, he doesn't even understand the concept.

DH went to Oberlin. No frats there

I was in a sorority, but it wasn't a big deal. They weren't residential, and it just wasn't a big part of my life, though I liked the chance to get to meet people I wouldn't have met otherwise, including upperclass(wo)men. I think something like 50% of women at my alma mater were in sororities when I was there, and I'm sure it was a big deal for some of them, but I kind of forget about it when I think about my undergrad experience. It was probably the least defining aspect of those four years for me!

I went to a large southern public university and it was the way of life, for sure. My parents went to large southern universities - they both did it - so I was 'encouraged'. It was fun in a lot of ways, and not for me in many others. I'm not sorry I did it, but it didn't remain a big part of my life or identity once it was over.

DH did and he is very close/involved still, but he had a much different experience at a small private northeastern school.

Yup! I'm a KKG, it was a wonderfully positive experience for me. My husband wasn't Greek, but he was on the football team so that was his "brotherhood".

Yes. Was in a sorority and a lot of my sistas are still close friends. It was a great experience for me and if DD wants to rush, I'll support it.

@septca: Aww! DLAM Did you have a small or big chapter? I ended up graduating with 10 girls in my pledge class (I think we started out at 17).

@mediagirl: I guess I should clarify...they didn't go over it at orientation for transfer students so I didn't know about it when I got there, the first day of rush. I tried to join at the end of the day (when I had figured out what was going on) and they told me I was too late

Yep, I was a Sigma Kappa and after I graduated moved to Indiana to work at national headquarters. Worked for them 2 years and met my husband in Indiana... so I guess my sorority got me my husband!

My dad died while I was rushing (or "going through recruitment"... after working at NHQ I should know better!) and it was the only thing that held me together when I got back to school. If I hadn't been rushing and found a sorority I liked I would have transferred, since I went to school about 8 hours from home.
