No rules. I have would have no problem with my husband spending time with a female friend, and he has no problem with me hanging out with my guy friends.

No rules. Some of my closest friends are guys, and my husband has many close friends who are women.

We don't have rules but we don't really have close opposite sex friends. My husband ran into a female friend from high school last weekend. She's always been totally weird with me and when he saw her she asked if he wanted to go on a trip across the country with her- partly to see a mutual friend so it wasn't that insane but come on, a married man with a family? So I'm glad he's not close with any females because some of us can be strange with men!!

my husbands best friend of 30 years is female. I and her husband are completely secure in their friendship. I have many male friends, and my husband is totally fine with that.

Not every man is attracted to every woman, and vice versa. Adults who want to can control themselves, easily.

It might present an easier opportunity in some cases to hook up with an opposite sex friend, but you have to want that opportunity to happen in the first place. That's what invites trouble - not the friendship. The friendship is just a cop out, and if I had to have tons of rules with my spouse, honestly I would have to wonder why I felt that need.

@JennyD: I am with you. Unless there was a real specific reason I just don't think it is usually a good idea. We don't really have a rule, but we have naturally let friendships with members of the opposite sex fizzle out, or we have become friends with their spouses as well as a couple. It has never been an issue. If I did feel like I wanted to meet an old friend to catch up and my DH wasn't available to join us that would be fine, but it isn't a thing we would do regularly.

We don't have any defined rules. My husband doesn't have any female friends, although I'd be fine if he did. I have had men friends my whole life and my best male friend ended up being a good friend of my husband's too now.

That being said, I have sort of a personal rule about the sort of things I talk about with male friends v. female. I'll talk about my sex life with female friends (not all the time but sometimes-- and especially surrounding pregnancy/postpartum!) whereas I pretty much stopped talking about my sex life with male friends once I realized my husband was The Guy.

We both have close friends of the opposite sex that we hang out with alone sometimes. We don't have any rules.

My husband and I can be friends with whomever we would like. We trust and respect each other and have the ability to exercise self control. Also, i am of the Mindset that if someone wants to cheat they will do it regardless of any "rules" you have.

DH and I are pretty old fashioned so we typically don't spend time with a member of the opposite sex by ourselves socially. We both have opposite gender friends but they are either a) gay, b) far away so we communicate by social media, c) we are friends with them as a family so we usually hang out as couples or families. Even those we communicate with by phone or electronically we tell each other about just naturally as a part of our daily conversations. We don't have like strict rules about it, but it's just something we both feel the same way about.

No rules. We each typically go on business trips or luncheons with opposite sex friends/co-workers. We trust each other implicitly. My best friends from high school are men, as are my friends from work. I work in a male-dominated field, so if DH had an issue, he would have had to get over it. I have had male friends let their interest in me be known, although I ended up distancing myself from those friends, my choice. Friendship is a two-way street, as is cheating.

We have mostly couple friends. Haven't had to worry about female friends with DH. I befriended them and now they're my friends.

My best friend is my ex-boyfriend from high school. It would have been a deal breaker for me if my husband was not ok with our relationship. Yea, we dated but that was so long ago at this point and our relationship is so 1000% platonic. He's like a brother to me. Besides him, I have several other very good male friends. I don't hang out with any of them alone often but that's just because usually we're hanging out in more of a group setting, not because I can't or wouldn't.

I literally do not understand the idea that women should only be friends with women or men with men. Or to make it ok you have to be friends as couples. Like you can't be friends with half of the population?

@Mrs. Lion: And the issue that I take with that line of reasoning is that it implies (to me) that men and women can not be trusted to act appropriately. It implies (again, to me) that people are inherently going to do the wrong thing, as opposed to being able to compartmentalize their feelings for people.

Oh and one other thing, you don' have to be friends with someone to have sex with them. There's an entire thriving sex industry in this country. It's there because there is a demand. So, having the rule doesn't mean there are no ways around it.

@looch: i get what you mean. For me though, I dont believe most people set out to cheat....i think its a gradual thing that ends with a bad decision and leaves a lot of destruction thats really hard to recover from. For us we didnt give up any important friendships, we just choose not to cultivate new ones. It really isnt a sacrifice so for us it makes sense. If we had preexisting important friendships that would probably be an exception.

No rules. Both DH and I have opposite sex friends and coworkers that we spend time with independently. We've never discussed it and I think both of us would be offended if it came up. We're secure in our marriage.

@sapphire: why would either of you be offended? we had to do pre marriage counseling bc of the church we got married in. And the priest just said look this statistically happens frequently in marriages, even strong ones, you need to have more than superficial conversations about it and he brought up good questions. Any workplace I've ever been in I've seen male/female friendships cross a line bc one person has hit a rough point in their relationship for whatever reason. For such a common hurdle in marriages it seems like an odd topic to be offended about.
