Going down stairs...if I actually look at the next step down I lose my momentum and start to freak out.

@bao same with me for the see thru stairs! I have to hold on to DH when we go up or down

  3. ShootingStar

I'm afraid of the cheese grater. Both using it and washing it.

Tidal waves. I've had nightmares about them since I was a little kid!

@prettylizy: haha yup me too, he thinks I'm crazy!

Stairs that are steep, narrow, made of marble because it seems slippery, the kind with gaps between the steps... I'm afraid of falling down them.

I totally forgot about stairs with holes... those are terrible! My grandparents have a staircase like that and I hate it. I always go up the other stairs! Lol

@mfa_lady: Same. Vomit phobia! Just the thought of it gives me a panic attack. Feeling sick myself, being near someone who is sick, knowing there's a bug going around...

  9. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@IRunForFun: SAME SAME SAME. People in real life think it's the same as just "I hate throwing up" but it's actually a real thing. A real phobia! The absolute worst. At least we're not alone?

    cantaloupe / 6692 posts

Bugs. I spazz the eff out. I can't have a logical reaction to a bug.

Also clogging toilets. Everytime I go #2 I panic a bit that I'll clog up the toilet and someone will have to come in and fix it and see my poop!!! Legit

@mfa_lady: Yes! I always get the "Well no one likes throwing up..." Duh, but I'm TERRIFIED of it. At least it somewhat helps to know it's a documented phobia...

  12. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@IRunForFun: EXACTLY. I'm a bit terrified of this early pregnancy business, but it's a risk I'll take for a baby!

    Birds, bugs, winged things. Yuckkk!
Talking on the phone, having to make small talk, meeting new people.
Going down carpeted stairs with socks on. I've slipped too many times!

Clusters. Like honeycombs or anything else that's a group of holes like that. Ugh, I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

@mfa_lady: @IRunForFun: Count me in for the vomit phobia.

For anyone who hasn't heard of it..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emetophobia

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@googly-eyes: @IRunForFun: Have either of you ever tried to do anything/see someone about it? I never have. Sometimes I wonder if should--it can be really debilitating and I wonder how I'll manage once I have kids.

    Slugs!
Ugh, even typing the word gives me the shivers.

I just know LO is going to find one in our yard, pick it up, and bring it to me one day. I am bracing myself for that day.

This silly fear stops me from gardening. I always walk on my tip toes in the summer, with a flashlight, because I don't want to step on one. I wish I could get over it!

  18. IRunForFun

    pomelo / 5509 posts

@mfa_lady: Just seeing this now...yes my phobia has been quite debilitating for me (not wanting to go to work if a bug is going around, not being able to be around DH if he's sick...) so I've done therapy (not that helpful, to be honest, it's hard to find a therapist who understands the specific phobia) and I take an SSRI. The SSRI has tones the fear down to a manageable level. I'm not sure if my case is "extreme" or what since I've never really met anyone else with the same problem!

I hate talking on the phone too!
I get ridiculous anxiety driving (or being in a car) in heavy traffic - driving through big cities gives me panic attacks.

I'm also super fearful/paranoid about talking on the phone. It drives my husband crazy!

I have this weird fear about driving next to trucks (like big wheel trucks). I always envision a piece flying off and impaling me in the neck.

@ShootingStar: I'm so terrified of the cheese grater, I use the cusinart to grate all my cheese. Even though it takes up a quarter of the dishwasher to clean. Will. not. touch. the. grater.

Throwing up, needles (especially blood tests) and clusters.

  22. MamaJ

    pear / 1609 posts

@JessKas: I have the same fear about the big trucks. When I drive on the freeway and DH is with me, he laughs at me because I have to speed up to pass them or it gives me anxiety!

Another weird fear... food stuck on dishes that have already been washed. This morning I was unloading the dishwasher and there was a piece of food still stuck to the colander. I literally gagged and I thought I was going to puke. Luckily I didn't.

@mrsrain: I hate making calls too. I do the same thing with the notes. I would say public speaking is my biggest fear, followed by making certain phone calls.

When I studied abroad during college, I signed up for an iternship for credit. I was assigned to host a 1-hr radio talk show (in Spanish!!!)... OMG - worst placement ever! I was terrified of the whole thing! BUT, I survived and I will say, it totally got me over my fear of pretty much anything and everything for the next few years. Nothing was scary after that! Even public speaking was ok for awhile since it at least was in English! Talk about exposure therapy! Sadly, I got uncomfortable with public speaking again after a few years back in the States.

@mrsrain: I feel the exact same way about the phone!!!

@alohaorchid: oh yeah I am more terrified of throwing up than anything

  26. alohaorchid

    persimmon / 1404 posts

@jhd: me too, it's so ridiculous! I haven't since I was 11 *knock on wood* but it can easily consume me sometimes

  27. Crystal

    grapefruit / 4028 posts

Ok, this one is weird: bronze children and wax people.

No, just no. I hate them both.

  28. 78h2o

    grapefruit / 4441 posts

@IRunForFun: @mfa_lady: a good cognitive-behavioral therapist should be able to help you. Specific phobias usually respond very well to the right therapy. Sorry you didn't have a good experience, IRunForFun.

@alohaorchid: I ran our of the house when DH threw up a few months ago. I'm awful!

Oh I just thought of another really weird fear-- UTIs! lol. They just come on SO fast and so bad for me (like, I go from feeling totally fine to being literally in tears in under 3 hours) that I live in constant fear of getting one at an inopportune time when I can't get meds quick. I actually keep azo in my wallet just in case (and also do everything possible to avoid them!).

Me too on the phone phobia! I hate phones with a passion. I would rather walk to the other side of the campus where I work than speak to someone on the phone about something.

I'm also emetophobic. Which is a problem with a small child. DH is bad with needles and blood, so I deal with that, and he deals with vomit.

  32. alohaorchid

    persimmon / 1404 posts

@jhd: that sounds like something I would do!

  33. googly-eyes

    GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts

@mfa_lady: No, I haven't seen anyone about this. Until about a year or so ago I didn't realize this even was a "thing." When lo was littler the spit up didn't really bother me, but as she gets older I get more anxious when she gets sick or gaggy. She's only thrown up a couple times and only one was bad. But I felt so bad for her my anxiety over her sitting in her puke and crying overrode my anxiety about puke. I know there will probably be times in the future I have to turn to dh to deal with some of it. Thank goodness he doesn't throw up often (so far.) In his line of work people throw up all the time so he doesn't really care.
