What can you buy for 1 million in your zip code right now?

Nothing, apparently. This is the highest-priced residential property near me at the moment:

    http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/10-Westover-Rd-Troy-NY-12180/32238841_zpid/

    $549,000 for 5,800 square feet, 6 beds, 5 baths, on 11 acres.

You can get a fairly new 2000 sqft home. It's not bad but it's definitely not a mansion.

@Anagram: Ha! That's exactly why we had to move out. But I so miss it....

@SugarplumsMom: Wow! I don't know where you live, but it's beautiful! I love all of those.

The highest priced house is slightly over a million at 1.2, so the closest to a million would be $899,000. It's actually my aunt's neighbor. 7,200sf, 6 beds, 5 full baths, 2 half.

@MrsMate- hey, I live in Columbia/Savin Hill area of Dot!
I love the area too. We currently live in a triple decker-- I would love to buy a single family home in our neighborhood, but alas we don't have millions of dollars.

You can buy 22.5 acre land for under $1 million.

Or $850k for a 3bed/3.5bath house with 5,200 sq foot.

Only really ugly homes that are gorgeous on the outside but that I would want to rip up and re-do the inside of. I think that defeats the purpose of buying a million dollar property

There are 25 houses in my neighborhood currently for sale for $950k-$1.25m. About 15 are part of a new development. These are a couple of the existing homes:

    $1,070,000; 5 br 4.5 ba

    $999,990; 4 br 2.5 ba

Houses in our neighborhood range from about $300k to $5.75m. It doesn't all depend on size, since homes with views of the water and/or mountains usually come at a steep premium. It's interesting because a lot of streets have $400k houses right next to $1.75m houses -- I like the variety!

Haha, I don't get a house for $1mio only a property of ca. 8,000 sq ft...
Ha, this is why we rent...

@SugarplumsMom: Oh your county is the place of my dreams!!

In my town you can buy two things.. a gorgeous condo that i'm totally posting the link to because the company DH and I work for did most of the work in these units..I designed my first ever commissioned custom closet for this specific unit (and they didn't even picture it )

Oh, or you can buy this trailer park in the scary part of town, 48 mobile homes for 995k.

@Anagram: haha I used to live in Jersey City so those prices look familiar to me. We moved to Texas late last year so now we could buy this for a little over a million. The difference in housing prices has been crazy!

2 streets over is a house that listed for $1.4 million, 3 br, 3 ba, 3500 sf. 2 streets over in the other direction is a listing for $1.2 million for 5 br, 3 ba, 3800 sf. Sigh. Why we'll never be buying in this neighborhood!

Depends on the school it is zoned to. An OK 3000 square foot home built in the 70s or a 4500 square foot home built in the 80s and rennovated.

@SugarplumsMom: Where are you in Sweden? My family is Swedish (from Gavle and Stockholm) and I have spent some time there. LOVE the yellow house!!!

@littlek: That's small?! Looks pretty big to me!!

In my exact zip code there is only one for $999,000. It is a 2 bed, 1 bath cottage (864 square feet) on a third of an acre, but it is directly ocean front with a private dock and deeded beach rights.

Nothing for a million! But for $825,000 I could get an 8 bedroom, 5.5 bathroom 6433 sq ft single family home.

Practically nothing. I'm in northern CA and everything is so expensive!

That's the going rate for a 3 bedroom condo in my area, I'd say.

@RLCeigh: Oh hello there! You know, I'm not sure I'd want one of these big old Dot houses, even if I could afford the mortgage. The upkeep has to be astronomical! Esp if you have wooden shingles that you have to paint every couple of years.

In my hood you can get a renovated, 3 br 1.5 bath house on a 25 ft wide lot. Or you can spend about 2 million for a new build, 4 br 3.5 bath house on a wider lot.

  36. alohaorchid

    persimmon / 1404 posts

    $1,049,000
    1804 sq ft
    3 bedrooms/3.5 bathrooms

    (and it's ugly)

This place is about five minutes from my house. 4100 sq, 4 bed, 3.5 bath model home. Listed for $1,040,000. I live two hours down the road from @oliviabolivia: Crazy the difference in prices (but I'd rather live in her city than mine!):

  38. ValentineMommy

    pomelo / 5791 posts

@Anagram: I'm in southern NJ, so I feel your pain. For 1million down here, you can get a 4+ bed, 4+ bath over 4000sf though. The prices up there are crazy! I assume because of NYC accessibility?

There aren't any houses that expensive in my zip code!!

This one is about 3 miles from my house though, and is 4,800 sq ft, 5 bd, 5 bath - fully renovated 1924 tudor: http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1204-W-59th-St-Kansas-City-MO-64113/2353099_zpid/
