This is more prevention than a solution to a problem you already have, but Citracel has changed my life. Take a scoop mixed in a glass of water every day, or just every so often when you start to feel a problem coming on. Any other fiber supplements have made me too gassy and uncomfortable. I like the powder but there is a pill form too. I take the sugar free one: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=15175&catid=184252&aid=337953&aparam=citrucel_sugar_free_fi&CAWELAID=61228047

Prune juice for something immediate. My doctor told me to take Colace (what they gave me at the hospital after I gave birth to help with constipation). Blackberries and pears are good natural long-term help. My 3-year-old eats a lot of blackberries and he's TOO regular. Hope you find relief soon!

Fiber one cereal (the original kind...just a half cup per day)...keeps you very regular and prevents problems.
for more immediate help - colace and Metamucil

Prune juice, fruit, lots of water, etc all kind of worked for me, but my absolute savior in this regard has been Trader Joes fiber bars. I have one most days now and havent had an issue with constipation in months!

Miralax for emergency situations. I'm generally constipated and noticed that when I took a pre-natal that contained probiotics, it kept me pretty regular.

For prevention, I have also had some luck with yogurt....its the probiotics that help keep things moving along regularly. Greek is better than regular, I think.

I had sever constipation and the only things that worked for me were: cutting out most dairy, eat tons of fruit/fiber, and Miralax with an additional stool softener (my doctor recommended Durolax) and usually the next day it would happen. My OB told me you can not OD on these meds and they won't hurt the baby. I went 6 days, so I was in a lot of pain but once it got moving it was the greatest feeling ever.

Magnesium supplements. My neurologist started me on them for migraines, and it was the first time in my life I was actually regular (I seriously thought going every 2-3 days was normal).

I only had a little constipation during the first trimester when my eating was all out of whack, so I guess my normal diet does the trick. I am mostly vegetarian. I eat a lot of fruit (minimum of 4 servings a day) and apples especially seem to help. I stay well hydrated and drink water throughout the day. I eat yogurt pretty much every day, beans a few times a week, whole grains at least 90% of the time, and of course as many vegetables as possible. I've been super regular and ready to go as soon as I drink some water or coffee after waking up.

I have chronic stomach issues which were very severe when I was a child. I can keep the problems in check by drinking tons of water and taking Miralax every day. I took Milk of Magnesia every day from age 7 until 22, but then switched to Miralax.
Because of my existing consideration issues, I'm terrified of how pregnancy will effect it.

@jessiejo17: I know this is probably a silly question but did you happen to ask your doctor if there is any risk to the baby by straining to go? That's what I'm most worried about even though I know it's probably totally fine.

I've been taking one Colace a day and let me tell you....lifesaver!!! I used to have daily constipation but not anymore! My OB said it's totally safe because it doesn't go into your blood stream or enter the placenta. He said it's basically in and out.

When I got home from the hospital, my mom cut up a ton of fruit including watermelon and grapes. It was easy to snack on it throughout the day and I was able to really easily have my first BM post delivery.

My doctor had me take a peracolace everyday because I was really bad

@MamaMoose: Yes I did and for me it was a little different as I had a large cyst on my right ovary, she was scaerd that the extra pressure/pushing would cause it to twist or burst so there was a little added concern. Normally though it is not a problem, she had one lady go 2 1/2 weeks without a movement and everything was fine in the end.
Better to get it taken care of before that long of a wait, the stress you feel can transfer to the baby and I was feeling stressed about it for sure.
Also, it seems silly but what helped me (with the nurses's advice) is when you are trying to yell a little, for some reason it worked...of course only want to use when at home

APRICOTS! I have 1-3 a day when I'm not feeling great and they clear everything right up!

Ground flax in a yogurt cup is great if you don't want to take something like Colace for a long term solution.

@jessiejo17: ok thanks. I actually chugged so grapefruit juice and had some success some I'm feeling a lot better. I was just feeling concerned that baby may have been affected by my efforts. Pregnancy is so fun!!

I've never had a problem with constipation but after delivering Wagon Jr. I didn't have a bowel movement for something like 10 days. !!! I was so scared. Colace did nothing for me because my painkillers were constipating me. I stopped with the painkillers and pretty soon I was doing ok, but I ended up with internal hemorrhoids. The doctor told me to do miralax and benefiber, as well as prescribing a suppository to help me heal. That sucked. But after about a week I was back to normal.

@MamaMoose: p.s. pushing a baby out is JUST like pushing poop out, so sometimes I get scared that I'm pushing too hard...!! but no one ever prepared me on how to push, so let me tell you now, just push like you're pooping!
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@mrs. wagon: I'd heard that before which is why I was nervous that pushing to poop would be bad for the baby!! But I guess as long as your cervix is closed the baby doesn't really get effected by pushing at this point.

Kashi cereal, hummus, fruits and veggies - when I do all in one day, it can be overkill . . .

@MamaMoose: did or does your stomach hurt too? My stomach terribly hurts and I think it's making it worse since I am on progesterone but I am starting to worry something is wrong
squash / 13199 posts
@MamaMoose: I eat raisin bran with added granola religiously, I also added more oatmeal and high fiber fruits to my diet and forced myself to drink way more water than I really wanted to.
My OB at one point gave me samples of a pre natal that had a stool softener but I hated them so I realized I had to focus on my diet
