Do you have any Christmas eve events to attend or do you stay at home?
DH's family always got together to exchange gifts.

No one else offers to host so we stay home. Usually my inlaws come over for dinner and bring their gifts. Then, we read Twas the night before Christmas to the kids.

We are planning church at 4 or 5 and then coming home for some pictures of the kids in front of the tree and appetizers for dinner. Then changing to PJs for hot cocoa!

We have a get together at my Aunt's every year. I am tired just thinking about it! But it is good to see everyone and DD LOVES parties, people, gatherings of any kind.

Usually we have Christmas Eve service at church but since DD can't hang that late, we'll be chilling at home!

Growing up, Christmas Eve was always spent with just my immediate family. We'd either go to church and then have dinner or have dinner and do midnight mass. As my brothers and I have grown up and had our own families, we've all kind of migrated on to do our own things so that we can all wake up in our own homes on Christmas morning. Since we live close to my parents, we have them over and make a huge meal after we go to church. Then we are able to put the boys to bed on time and hang out before they head home. As the boys get older and the bedtimes get later, I wouldn't mind moving the party back to my parents' house. Less for me to clean up.

We used to host a Christmas Eve meal and drinks for our friends but that stopped once our friends started having children because nobody could stay past bedtime (and we work Christmas Eve day). Now we do nothing.

Our big meal is on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas Day. And growing up, we always got to open one present from my parents before bed on Christmas Eve.

@Mrs.KMM: Oh yes, sometimes we each pick a family member that we want to "give" a present to (making sure everyone receives something). Basically the one perfect gift you are excited to give.
Also, sometimes turn off the lights and sing Silent Night and put baby Jesus in the manger in the nativity scene.

I play in a handbell choir so we always perform Christmas Eve at my church's Christmas Eve service

Christmas Eve was always the big celebration with my dad's family. We'd get together for dinner, then carols, then opening presents.
Now we alternate with DH's family.
My SIL and BIL throw a huge fancy shindig with 300 of their closest friends. Tons of food, caroling, pond hockey, sleigh rides, and famous people. It's fun and overwhelming.

The kids open their matching PJs from Mrs Claus in the morning. we go to church in the evening and then to my parents' house where we meet up with family & friends for dinner

Christmas Eve is our big dinner at my in laws. After dinner the kids go to bed and the adults (minus a couple who stay back) go to church at 10:00pm. Then at midnight we wake the kids up and open all the gifts. It is crazy! We end up getting home at 2am and then have my dad and brother and his family over in the morning then go to my mom's for another big dinner. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.

We go to the inlaws in the morning and spend the day with them. Then we make very quick visits to both my aunts and DHs aunts houses and then home. The kids by a "Christmas Eve box", so they'll open that, we'll all change into pjs, make frozen hot chocolate and watch a movie.

We get Christmas jammies.
I work, so after we will have dinner and then we are watching a Christmas movie. We've also invited a couple friends to stop by for a drink after bedtime.
Growing up Christmas Eve was usually the day everyone traveled to where we were spending Christmas.

@delight: instead of heating up the hot chocolate, I blend it with ice cubes in the magic bullet. DS is obsessed with it from Tim Hortons, so I make it now so it's not as pricey haha

@GrapeCrush: wow that sounds yummy! I've never noticed this at Timmy's before. Do you live in a hot climate? I'm totally going to try this!

We stay at my in laws house the 23rd and 24th. They always throw a big party and have a bunco tournament where there's a pot to win. One year DH and I won first and second place and won about $80! So that's always fun. We stay up late and hang out with all the cousins and extended family, do a cousins gift exchange, eat, drink. It's fun.

@delight: definitely not haha I live in Buffalo, but still prefer it frozen.
@mediagirl: it's delish! With some whipped cream on top!

Christmas Eve is when we do our Santa visit. Then this year for the first time we will be doing it w inlaws instead of Christmas morning with them. Presents early dinner at 3 then mass at 4. Home to watch Christmas movies just before bed!
