We are trying out a cleaning lady that was recommended by my boss. Until we know her better I'm not comfortable having her in the house alone so I'm home while she cleans. I offered her a drink and chatted with her when she first arrived. But now I'm sitting in the living room while she cleans upstairs and I'll move up to the loft when she comes to clean downstairs. I feel kind of rude but at the same time I'm sure she'd rather just get the job done and go home. It's just a little awkward!

We purposely have her come while we are at work. DH was here the first time they came to give us an estimate, then we just gave them a key and they come during the day while we are at work. I could be trusting to the point of naive, though! I'd say if they were recommended by someone you trust, though, after this one you would be fine to not be home.

It is awkward! We don't have a cleaning lady, but the family I nannied for did and my mom had one when I was a teenager. I always just try to be on the floor of the house that they aren't cleaning.

So I've always been awkward with cleaning people until now. We've found one that is almost like a friend, so of I'm home I usually work on one part of the house while she's working on another. Unfortunately, I'm rarely home and the nanny usually gets to hang out with her.

I have a couple of rooms that I don't have them clean ( my office and the nursery) so I just hang out in there with the dogs.

I'm always home when she comes (DH prefers it that way). I'm usually working at the dining table and she cleans around me. When it's time for her to dust and wipe down the table, I move to the sofa, haha.

@LemonLong: keeping the dog entertained has been the toughest part! He wants so badly to see what she's doing up there!

I don't have a cleaning lady... but while I was a nanny the family had a cleaning lady and she was interesting... she would sing... loudly... the entire time she worked and it was totally awkward.. I would have preferred not being home haha!

I'm at work when she comes.
The way I see it, it's her business. So, she isn't going to steal things from her clients if she wants good word of mouth and/or referrals.

I WAH so I just hide out in my office. When she cleans my office, I take a shower.
When I used to WOH, I had her come when I was at work. I didn't give her a key but I would let her in before I left for work and she would lock the door behind her. I've always had cleaners from word of mouth so I've never worried about them stealing from me. One girl cleaned for 1/4 of my company so I felt like she was definitely trustworthy.

I leave the house...too awkward. I was there once and I just felt so in the way!

I usually take my LO and pup out for a bit and do drive through errands while she cleans LO's room. I'll go to the bank and pharmacy to pick up meds. I like to get the dog out of their way too, even though they love him and don't mind him being there. If I have nothing to do we'll go play outside for awhile, then I'll go into LO's room and we'll play in there until they're gone.
When LO was younger and they'd be there when she was napping I'd just sit on the computer while they cleaned around me. It was awkward.... but that's life I guess. I always felt like I should be doing something, but her nap time was my time when I finally got to relax!

I'm usually at work, but if I'm working from home I hang out in the loft which we don't have her clean because my husband tends to pile papers and other stuff up there.

They clean upstairs first, so I just stay downstairs - usually on my laptop- and then I switch with them when they come downstairs, I go upstairs.
I felt awkward at first, but now I've gotten over it. I don't care and I don't think they do either.

I used to be at work but now that I'm maternity leave, I'm home when she comes. I think I'm going to find a new cleaning lady. Mine took 6 hours to clean and she is way too chatty. And she kept coming to check on me and the baby and she would watch me breastfeeding. Totally awkward!

@MamaMoose: I always leave treats out for the dog when they are coming. I'm sure he barks at the vacuum, since he does when we are home, so the treats hopefully make it easier.

I'm usually in a different room from the one she's cleaning. When she makes her way to this room, then I'll go to one of the rooms she's already cleaned.
