@Smurfette: what about making most of a savory casserole a few days in advance and then pour the eggs over the night before? I think the other ingredients will be fine in the refrigerator for a few days if they aren't sitting in raw egg.

Freshly baked coffee cake swirled with cinnamon and nuts! We would eat it while opening stockings, along with everyone having free access to all the gingerbread and shortbread cookies.

This is so interesting, I'm totally going to look into this casserole thing! We usually don't eat anything special on Christmas morning, just dinner!

@Mae: What are hanky pankies? (ETA: I ask because I'd never heard of them before I met my husband and if you say you're from Ohio, then they're the same thing. )
I can't even remember what we'd have...sneak cookies until lunch?

Always always always bacon sandwiches... Ever since I was three. Since DH and I moved in together, we've kept it the same. At the moment we do have time to make something more complex but I'm betting when we have hyped-up toddlers we'll be glad to have something quick and easy that you can eat one-handed. Those parents of mine were really onto something.

This year is the first one we will get to wake up all together as a family because usually DH is working or I've been up singing at midnight mass. We are going to have overnight coffee cake, which is like this yummy cinnamon cake. Cannot wait to cook it!!!

We don't usually cook breakfast. This year I want to start the tradition of homemade cinnamon rolls.

@Cherrybee: Ha no, Northern through and through. I do secretly like the taste of it but can't get past the thought of what it is.

We go to my parents' and eat eggs, bacon, biscuits, french toast casserole, coffee and juice/mimosas/bellinis! Yum

@Espion: Only the best food ever. lol. You brown a pound of ground beef with a pound of spicy sausage and then you melt velveeta cheese into the pan to make a meaty cheesy
goo. Then you put the goo on mini toast (either rye or pumpernickel, I prefer the latter) and you broil it until the cheese is just browned. I don't know if it is an Ohio thing (I do live in Ohio!) or not, but it would make sense since finding creative ways to eat meat/cheese/bread seems like a midwestern type thing

We do cinnamon rolls and eggs. It's fun to see everyone's traditions!

Corn bread with a poached egg on top, sausage, grape fruits, and orange juice

Sticky buns! Such a pain in the butt to make, but soooooo worth it. My grandma always brought sticky buns to our house and watched us open gifts, so I'm carrying on her tradition since she passed

Homemade cinnamon rolls, homemade cinnamon bread, bacon, eggs, hash browns, orange juice & a big cup of coffee.
Sometimes we make sausage too!

@Mae: Yup! That's it. DH insisted that it's a real recipe, but I've never believed him til now! It is his go-to for parties and holidays. He varies by going all sage sausage. I think he said its a Cleveland thing.

@Espion: Could be, I'm from a Cleveland suburb. I made it for my inlaws when we spend Christmas with them last year in NY and they had never heard of it.

It depends whose house we end up at for Christmas. My parents mix it up, but it's usually an assortment of eggs, bacon, corn beef hash, waffles, pancakes, fruit and hash browns.
My MIL does sausage casserole, sticky buns, and mimosas.
I always squeeze fresh OJ from whatever citrus is left on our trees to bring to whatever house we eat at.

@Mae: yup bacon on toast, or we'd sometimes fancy things up with a little bit of tomato and lettuce.

@Cherrybee: ah but people here in the uk have an english breakfast like all the time. I would want a tradition of preparing something different and a little special for xmas morning, no?

@sandy: That crockpot breakfast casserole is giving me major Christmas morning breakfast inspiration! It would be nice to make the night before and wake up to breakfast ready to go on Christmas!
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
@tlcbaby: I've made it several times and it's always a hit. I thought it would be just "meh" but everyone loves it...I think the key is getting good quality breakfast sausage. It's the easiest bc you can brown the sausage in advance and keep it in the fridge until you are ready to put everything in the crockpot. The French toast casserole is seriously so good...everytime I make it everyone loves it so much...and it's super easy and tastes like coffee cake with the crumb topping

Eggs, grapefuits, and leftover desserts from our Christmas Eve dinner. Some of these cinnamon-y casseroles look amazing though!
