When I make mashed potatoes, I make them with garlic, a bit of milk, sour cream, and salt.
Then, once they're on my plate, I put butter and a bit more salt on them. Sometimes gravy, too!

I did a lactose free one with chicken broth only and it was soooo yummy.
But typically.....cream cheese, garlic of some form, butter/marg, milk, sour cream. Sometimes some or all of those, ha!
Never salt! We never use salt on anything.

I like fattening potatoes....cream cheese, butter, roasted garlic, heavy cream or half and half and lots of salt!

Light cream, butter, salt, pepper. I like using white potatoes when I can find them. For whatever reason that type isn't consistently available in the supermarkets here.

@Mrs. Cat in the Cradle: I just found white potatoes yesterday and was so excited. I hardly ever buy them because they're normally more expensive but now I can't wait to make mashed potatoes tonight!!!

It depends, sometimes I like to fluff them up with milk, other times I like them with just a bit of olive oil.

I read a post the other day where they said the best mashed potatoes are made with only potatoes and butter! They rice the potatoes and then add lots of butter.
I cant imagine not using a little milk though - to make them creamy =)
I also use white potatoes!

Butter, garlic, milk. If I'm feeling really fancy some sour cream is delish
I've found that cooking them in low sodium chicken broth makes them really flavorful and I don't need as much butter!

Butter, milk, salt, pepper and a little bit of cooper sharp cheese...yum!

Butter, mayonnaise (I know, don't knock it until you try it!), seasoned salt, pepper (lots!), and a small bit of milk. Sometimes the milk is skipped and sour cream is used instead.

Milk, garlic, sour cream, salt & pepper........and my secret ingredient is a little mayo!

@autumnlove: Those are my kind of potatoes!
I make them with whatever I have on-hand really. Some combo of milk, cream, sour cream, cream cheese, nad/or broth. Usually garlic (powder, fresh garlic sizzled in some butter for a minute, or roasted garlic). ALWAYS salt and pepper.

@mediagirl: me too! And what is with that? Even the super spendy grocery store that smokes their own cow butt or whatever, doesn't carry white potatoes with any consistency.

@autumnlove: yes!!!
When we do them "fancy" like for holiday dinners it's heavy cream, cream cheese, real butter, garlic, salt, and pepper. Yummmmm

I sometimes make a dairy free version with chicken broth, garlic, salt, pepper, and olive oil. It's delicious, but the typical dairy version tastier.

@babyjmama: it's my husbands secret. I thought it was totally nuts when he first introduced me to it. Now it's our standard.

Whatever I have on hand that sounds good. Butter, milk or cream, salt, pepper, garlic, blue cheese or goat cheese.

@MamaG: my great grandma made them like that, my friends thought I was crazy.....until they tried them...;-) Sometimes I make them and don't tell people the recipe until after they rave hahaha

@rahlyrah: Me too! lol
We add butter, pepper and milk/cream. I don't add salt because I heavily salt the water I boil them in and this makes a big difference. I loooooove me some mashed potatoes!

Hanging onto these tips for Thanksgiving! Usually I use red potatoes and some roasted garlic.

My husband is in charge of making them, I loathe making them! He puts diced red peppers, diced red onion, garlic, milk, butter, and salt. Yummy!

Butter, cream, salt and sometimes with roasted garlic or blue cheese. I haven't made mashed potatoes in ages. We prefer them in chunks now, with browned butter and salt.
For LO (with allergies) she gets it was margarine, and peas, peas and carrots, or mushrooms.
