Social worker, no details. I don't get into details because people always comment on how sad and depressing the specifics of my job must be, when in actuality I'm really happy to help people out where I can and don't see it as sad at all. I work with HIV positive pregnant women.

I say "event coordinating & marketing design for a ministry home for women my mom founded, Restoration House Ministires".... I'm always looking to bring more awareness!

I say I'm a writer/editor but I definitely do a lot more than that!

I say I work as an engineer for a water district.

I say i work in HR, and then people start asking me about hiring and firing. I have given up on trying to explain what exactly i do.

I tell them I am a teacher. If they ask questions I will elaborate!

I say I teach pre- k and I either get "Awww that's precious that you get to play all day" or "Bless your heart, that takes a special person with a lot of patience." A version of one of those always follows, never fails. The first response usually makes me want to smack them.

SAHM. I tell people that DH is a boiler engineer, which he is but he actually fills more positions in different departments at his work but it's too hard to explain.

I'm a consultant.

Help manage a dry cleaners and restoration company. Most people really don't care, but they are intrigued by the Restoration aspect as most people don't know what it's for.

Aid worker. And then they assume I'm Peace Corps and on a gap year or something.
And then I tell them it's my career, and they look very confused.

External reporting. I used to say accountant but then people would always ask me tax questions. I'm not a tax accountant! In fact, I have someone else do my taxes!

@Espion: actually patient/appointment scheduling. I actually work in a call center. But being that its healthcare there are so many policies (over one hundred "visit types" a patient can be seen for and we get in trouble if we use the wrong one!), insurance crap, mean and crabby patients, compliance/privacy issues. I enjoy my job but if I say I schedule appointments it sounds wayyy easier than it is!

Depending on who it is I either day "I work with kids" (when I don't want to be bugged with medical questions or "physician/hospitalist". No one knows what a hospitalist is, so it's always interesting to see them grasping for the next question.

I generally tell people grad student, then if pressed PhD student studying genetics. Farther than that I start getting questions about how what I do/study matters which I really hate.

I'm a SAHM and say it with pride when asked.

When I was working though, I'd either say social worker or child protection social worker, depending on my mood. I like talking about my job and breaking down some of the preconceived notions people have - and as I have only worked outside of the US in social work, I enjoy explaining how the system works [oftentimes better] in other countries.

Before SAHM I would say project manager for a university strategic communications group. So tough to explain what I actually did.

I say I'm a SAHM and people usually tell me it's a tough job!

I say I'm an ESOL teacher. Usually people reply by asking me how many languages I speak. I do speak 2 other languages, but I teach ENGLISH.

On "The Office" Michael Scott met an ESL teacher once (same job, different acronym). He thought she meant ESP and asked if she was psychic. I'm hoping to get that reaction one day!

I tell them I'm a scientist. If they ask more I elaborate but usually the broad term "scientist" is good enough to get the point across.
