I said "I work in finance" as people never understood what I did.
Since becoming a SAHM, I haven't been asked that question yet. I am curious to know what kind of reactions I will get. Somebody ask me!!

I generally say grad student and leave it there.
@MrsScallop: Same! I also hate the "when will you be done?" question. I know people mean well, but I have *no* idea when ill be done!

I manage a team of business analysts. I hardly ever get asked though. -People always ask me what my husband does, even if he's not even there! It really annoys me!

I say I'm a teacher or primary teacher. I actually enjoy talking about my job/students/education & I think it's an "easy" job type for people to relate to - everyone knows a teacher - even if there are misconceptions.
This makes me think of an article I read about how asking people what they do for a living is pretty narrow & usually code for "how important are you"? I try to ask strangers "how do you spend your time?" so they don't have to talk about their work if they don't want to.

I say I'm a stay at home mom, but once in a while I temp at a mission place. They'll ask questions about either or say nothing.

I usually say that I worked in social work/mental health counseling, but now am home with Lo...if people ask where I say I worked in a substance abuse outpatient center, which usually gets a "wow, that sounds depressing"

I tell people I work in a dental office, when I tell people I'm a hygienist, they usually tell me they hate the dentist and how long it's been since they had a cleaning last or point out something in their mouth for me to look at.

I just tell people I'm an attorney. Then when they try and get free legal advice about their DUI/Divorce/Aunt's Will/ETC. I tell them I'm not that kind of attorney.

I say I work in real estate. I usually get asked if I'm an agent (I'm not) or if I want to be (not sure).

I name the company I work for and people just comment that that's cool and wants to know which products I support. Oh, and they always ask if I know so-and-so who works at the same company.

I just say Ga Pre-k Teacher. They know what that is since most of their kids are in school. I'd say teacher, but I know the next question, so by saying that, I'd cut it off.lol

@LovelyPlum: ugh, every grad students' least favorite question! I know for a few years every time I got that one the answer was about 2 years. Yeah....that didn't happen, ha!

I say I'm a SAHM. They always ask what I did before (DC is accomplishment crazy!), so I just say I worked on the Hill.

I say I'm home with M most days and a critical care nurse two days a week!

Exercise therapist. Their face usually says it all. Duhhhh what is that? Then they think im a physio. Sure, close enough!

@mewtill: I agree. People like talking to me about my job because everyone has experience with school. The part I don't like is now that I'm around more people with school-aged children people ask specifics about my school, their child's school, is this/that a good school, or why our district was in the paper, etc.
papaya / 10570 posts
I say I "help vulnerable people to manage their money" when in actual fact I'm more on the strategy side now, helping organisations to help their vulnerable clients!
pomegranate / 3716 posts
I say, "Wedding planner and I own my own business". It usually generates some interest.
pear / 1632 posts
I say I'm a substitute teacher and coach because that's what I've been doing for the last three years while I wait for a position to open up in my field and district. I've said I'm a teacher to some but then feel like I can't because I don't have my ft job yet...:o
My hubby is a fisheries biologist so he works with fish...usually get many questions after that....

HR at a retirement/assisted living non-profit. People think I'm way more important and powerful than I really am

I'm a researcher at a biotech company. I get asked what I'm working on, and then I get to be all mysterious and say that I can't say.
It's interesting that so many people don't like follow up questions. I really like hearing about what people do - there are so many different jobs out there and I know nothing about most of them.

CPA, which always generates tax questions. I do tax, but mostly corporate and partnership tax, but I also do audit (which is where I spend the bulk of my time) so I don't have a huge amount of individual income tax knowledge and I hate answering tax questions.

I use to tell people I worked in a law firm. Now I just admit I'm an attorney/lawyer. Not sure why I didn't say that from the beginning!

I work in insurance, pretty much a lead balloon as far as conversation goes.........

I tell them that I mother full time, and I always get a lot of nice comments about how lucky I am. If they're asking more about my interests, I'll tell them that I used to work in genetics research, and that I plan to go back to that or some other science education thing some day.
And I'm also very interested to hear that people don't like to talk about their jobs. I love to learn more about the things people do and what they're interested in. I've never met someone who didn't like to talk about it.

@yin: I think my reaction would be wow that's awesome. A lot of work! At least that was my reaction when my CIL quit her job to be a SAHM.

@sarac: it's not that I don't like to talk about my work? It's just a bit complicated to explain, so it doesn't fit that well in cocktail chatter. So I just keep kind of vague, for everyone's sake!

Sales...I keep it vague. Often referred to as scum.
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
I say grad student and if they ask questions I tell them about my field and research interests. I never mind talking about it. On the other hand, dh has a really hard job to explain and we both dread it when people ask about it! Seriously, my really good friend's fiance recently asked me if dh is actually a spy because his job sounds like the kind of cover job an agent would pretend to have, lol. dh will answer kind of vaguely but then it just makes them more curious or confused

That I work for a large hardware and security company. If they ask what I do I say keying specialist but it's really really specific and boring and let's talk about something else. People ask because they're polite but honestly unless you're like me and into it, my job will make you SNOOZE!
