The name is Selah (Say-la). DD's name is Alice. Do you think they fit together? If you don't like it, do you have any ideas of something that would be better with DD's name.

@Mrs. Monkey: I like it! Only just heard it a week or two ago bc a mommy blogger has a daughter named Selah!

Reminds me of Rastafarians.
If you like the name go with it but I think you should spell it Sela.

@Mrs. Monkey: Sorry to say, but it sounds like a made up name to me. Alice is classic, and while I don't think that names necessarily have to go together, I think they are too disparate. Plus, Selah sounds like Alice backwards. Seems a little weird, and I'd be wary of my kid (or others) making that connection.

I like it, but it's such a different style from Alice that I wouldn't use it as a sibling name.
I think @T.H.O.U.: 's recommendation of Sadie is a good one. Similar sound to Selah but a much more complimentary style match.

@T.H.O.U.: I do like Sadie but unfortunately we're constrained by finding a name that fits in DH's first language as well. Unfortunately Sadie doesn't work

There's a town in my state with that name and not a real great place so I have a negative association. The town is pronounced See-luh so I would also mispronounce. Alice is a really classic name so I would probably stick tomorrow traditional names.

@Mrs. Monkey: I think it is beautiful! I love names that start with S, and it has a substantial meaning.

@oliviaoblivia: Japanese
Alice is pronounced slightly differently but it still fits. I also like June and it fits with Alice but DH isn't as into it. He's really into Selah.

I think it's pretty. I've never heard the name before though, so I would probably pronounce it Sel-ah at first glance.

I know a few people with that name and love it! I say if you love it, use it. I also don't think it goes poorly with Alice - they flow well together.

I like it! One of my students has that name, just spelled Saila..

I think it's a lovely name but wouldn't pair it with Alice.

@T.H.O.U.: I like that, but more for a boy.
Thanks for your input everyone!

I love it! I love names that a different. I think it works fine with Alice.

I like it ok. I agree it doesn't really go with Alice that much but I don't think that's a huge deal.
The spelling and pronunciation thing would be a deal breaker for me. I actually would have pronounced it correctly but would probably spell it wrong.

I like it, I just don't think it goes with such a classic name like Alice.

What about with the spelling that @MRSJAZZ suggested - Sela??
I actually like this spelling a lot more but worry that people would pronounce it See-la. Still a no go?
coconut / 8472 posts
I'm not into names where the pronunciation will have to be explained her entire life . I would've thought it was See-luh, like Sela Ward.
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
I really like it! There's a beautiful song by Lauryn Hill called "selah"

I also would assume it's pronounced See-luh. I think Saila as @LilSprinkles: suggested is most likely to be pronounced the way you want.
pomelo / 5607 posts
@Mrs. Monkey: See-la is how I would pronounce it regardless of spelling, but especially with Sela. Some names just have too many pronunciations to expect everyone to get it "right," so you have to decide how much that matters to you. And don't count on people getting it right even after you tell them. My LO's name is Lilana, and people pronounce it Lil-i-ann-uh, even when they haven't seen it written and we say it Lil-i-ahn-uh.

My friend named her baby, who is 1/4 Japanese, Manami. Although I don't want to admit it to her, so many people had/have a hard time pronouncing it (including me until they told me how and I practiced saying it), and she doesn't like that people try and call her Mimi, which her older son came up with as a nickname. They apparently also considered Takami (which I think is easier to pronounce, honestly). However, with Alice (what I consider to be a classic American name) as your other daughter's name, I think Selah is pretty alternative. I also pronounced it "Sell-uh" until I read your pronunciation. What about Suki or Sorano (if you want an "S" Japanese name)?

I like it! If you were going to combine with Alice in a middle name situation, it wouldn't go as well. But for siblings I think it works just fine! People will pronounce it wrong, but people also mispronounce even common names so there is only so much you can do.
pomelo / 5573 posts
I think it's a pretty name! I agree that if you don't want her to have to correct mispronounciations you should spell it Seila (or Sayla) but either way it's lovely.

I'd avoid the "l" sound if you want it to be relatively easily pronounced in Japanese. What about:
Naomi
Cora
Emma
Sarah
They won't "translate" perfectly (they're still decidedly Western-sounding), but they'll be easier to pronounce.

I love it. I know the Hebrew word from the Bible, so that's what I think about.

I love it and it was on my list-- the spelling Sela, but I have always pronounced it Seh-la, not Say-luh.
cherry / 193 posts
@honeybear: it would be Seira in Japanese. With the Japanese "r" it would sound similar to "l". Thanks for the other good suggestions as well

there's a town here in Washington called Selah- by Yakima... it's pronounced "See-la" though so people might have a hard time pronouncing it!

I had a Selah in my preschool class a few years ago - I think it's beautiful!

I think Selah is a beautiful name, and know a couple! One of DD's bffs is named Selah. It isn't made up since it's from the book of Psalms in the bible.

@Mrs. Monkey: I voted that I wasn't into it, but when you suggested Sela - I instantly felt different! I I wouldn't ever assume See-la with Sela.
honeydew / 7444 posts
@Mrs. Monkey: my friend's name is pronounced the same but spelled Ceila. I like the Sela spelling too.
