@artsyfartsy: I'm thing to get DH on board. He hasn't vetoed but he thinks it's too "out there"

I like it, but I have never known anyone named Poppy and I'm having trouble picturing it on a grown woman.

@Synchronicity: yes this
It doesn't quite pass my test of "hello my name is poppy" said when walking into an interview at 30 years old. But maybe it some creative fields it would?

It's cute. My friend was considering it for her girl, but her husband vetoed it because he thought it sounded like papi...the word for "daddy" in Spanish. Ever since I just think of that.

@Synchronicity: I do too sometimes. But I think with peers names things like:
Ruby
Piper
Penny
Lily
Jaya
Ella
Daisy
..it doesn't seem too childish? I feel like it fits in with current name trends. But maybe not. I'm biased because I enjoy the name

Poppy is the name we used for my grandpa, so I have a hard time getting past that and couldn't ever use the name for that reason. I also like it better as a nickname - maybe for Penelope?

I love it as a nickname, but I'd pick a longer name to give her more options. But that's my style- I like a great big name with a sweet nickname. Penelope?

Doesn't pass the lawyer/doctor/professional name when LO is older test to me. Cute nickname.

I really like it. One of my clients is named Poppy, so I totally see it working on an adult. I agree that it also fits in well with the list of peer names.

I would *maybe* consider it as a nickname, but sorry, way too... silly almost. I don't like it at all.

My DD3 was actually going to be a Poppy. We didn't decide until 7 or so hours after she was born that she was instead an Ivy.
Love it.

@Torchwood: really? It's a flower! I think it sounds no more "silly" than something like Katie or Ashley, or any other name ending in the same sound (which don't sound silly to me).
I LOVE the name!

I love it! Here in the UK you hear it quite a lot, as a full name, especially in recent years. All the flower names - Poppy, Rosie, Ivy, Daisy, Lily etc - have been used a lot among my friends.

I actually really like it. But around here a lot of grandfathers are called Poppy. So I couldn't do it.

I've always loved this name - one of Jamie Oliver's daughters is named Poppy and I've thought it was adorable since I heard it.

It's cute, but not my taste. I can't imagine an adult with the name Poppy.

It's cute, but I know more than one person with a dog named Poppy, so it's now a dog name in my head.

@travelgirl1: @Cherrybee: yes it's so high on the rankings in UK - I think it's the number 5 most popular name!?
@Rainbow Sprinkles: Ivy is also on our list
Thanks for all the replies - I'm glad there's only 4 people who think it's the worst name ever

I have a friend who's daughter is Poppy so I think it's adorable. It is her middle name but they call her by it and nobody would know her first name unless she told them. But I guess when she's older she can always choose to go by her first name if she thinks poppy is too childish.
pomelo / 5093 posts
I love it. It's not especially unique or weird. I gave my daughter a similar though more traditional name (Beatrix). She has a more traditional middle name, and I figured that if she grows up disliking her first name she can always use her middle name. Or just choose another, like my husband did. Either way, I picked a name I like, and she can do as she pleases.

I'm eh about it. One of my college classmates calls his daughter Poppy as a nickname, which I'm fine with.

I think it's adorable.
Any "new" popular name isn't going to pass the lawyer/Doctor test. Our age can't imagine an Emma being my doctor either and I'm sure everyone would say Emma passes that test. I think the only thing to think about is: is it a name that you yourself would enjoy having? If so, I say go for it.
There's also an actress named poppy Montgomery I believe.

@LibbyLou: true. I can't imagine a doctor Piper or Ella or Brayden. But there certainly will be some

@Mrs. Champagne: right! I had a doctor named Justin and I thought that was weird!
pomelo / 5220 posts
@Mrs. Champagne: I love it.
Also, I don't even know most of my doctor's first names... I think my son's pediatrician is Brenda?

I like it as a nickname. I have heard it used as a nickname for Penelope.
I have a name that should basically have been a nickname but it's my given name. I will be honest, I don't like it. I wish I had a "real" name. Just my opinion though.
cantaloupe / 6146 posts
I don't think it's a nickname. It's a flower. I wouldn't change that.
