Ugh! My MIL just asked the DH to ask me.
I hate this question. I have such a hard time trying to think of things I want and need.
The first thing that popped in my head was to have a baby. Haha. Need to be realistic here. Plus, under $50.

Ha I could rattle off a list a mile long. Mostly books from Amazon, but I'd ask the MIL for a gift card to Target so I could buy some clothes and nursing bras.

I used to get questions like this from my mom. I finally told her I think we're too old to still be doing gifts.

@Mrs.Someone: I tried this with my MIL saying we should only do gifts for the kids and she shot it down. So I guess it's yet another pair of pajamas for me this year.

@bluestriped bee: all I want is a baby too!
I never know how to answer this question. My DH usually passes on ideas, but they are usually things I would never expect, and while appreciated, are not on my wish list.
This year, I'd like gift cards from amazon, mani/pedi, date night gift cards.

@bluestriped bee: my SIL recently asked me this via email. I told her I would love some simple knit gloves or a scarf. I also told her I love fancy chocolates and ornaments.
Is there a bottle of wine or champagne you like to drink? Or maybe a gift certificate for a pedicure? I also love receiving fancy toasting flutes. Is there anything for the house you need? I love the home accessories from Anthropologie - like the vases or jewelry holders. Or appetizer plates from Crate and Barrel...or anything from there for your house

My MIL gives me a gift card because I'm just like this. DH asked me this and it took 3 days for me to decide I want a bird feeder. I can't think of anything elsr that isn't baby related or "peace on earth" or other out of grasp thing lol.

I hate exchanging gifts. I don't mind spending money on people, but I hate shopping and prefer to pick out my own stuff and minimize clutter in my apartment. So, gift giving usually falls flat with me. My parents are constantly buying us stupid crap that we don't want or need. As soon as I pop out this baby, I'm going to open up a 529 plan for him and ask them to just deposit any cash they want to spend on me or my husband into the college fund instead. I have been waiting for this opportunity for years!
I don't mean to sound like a Scrooge. I just dislike buying stuff just for the sake of it.

I like things that are consumable, so I like a gift cert for a mani/pedi, a bottle of liquor (not wine), a pile of magazines, etc.
I can come up with a million gift ideas for myself, I suck at buying for others though.

Oh gosh, how about for my husband to stay up with the baby for the night so I can sleep 8 hours, at night, in our bed (vs the couch)??
Aside from that-- giftcards to Amazon are good for just about anything, I'd buy Kindle books... also Starbucks giftcards
Cozy PJs, scarfs and maybe a GC to the salon I go to to get my hair done or a pedicure
Adding: bath and body stuff from Lush... or The Body Shop.
