My dad works in the mining industry; I would never want to do what he does.

My mom was a SAHM for many years, and also worked in some local and state government positions for a while. Now she's a front desk clerk for a local hotel. I wouldn't want to do that work either, lol.

My parents are both psychologists. Growing up people used to say "that explains everything" which would drive me nuts. My parents were/are fantastic parents and myself and my sisters are all really well adjusted and happy. I wish I had more psychology under my belt to better raise our daughter.

Both my parents began their careers in journalism, my mom as a news producer and my dad as a reporter (they met working at the same TV station!). After I was born, my mom returned to law school, and now she is a social security attorney who works mostly with homeless veterans. My dad spent most his career in TV, retired early, and now runs the local NPR station where they live.

I am getting an advanced degree in economics, so obviously not following their footsteps, ha.

My parents were accountants in two different federal agencies. At the end of their careers they were both managers. They're retired now and travel a lot.

I am nothing like them and not mathematically inclined at all. Instead, I design software so that it's user friendly.

My dad owns a mortgage company, and my mom was a SAHM for 25 years until my parents got divorced and she had to go back to work; she's a nurse at an assisted living place now. To be honest, I wouldn't want either of their jobs! Too stressful!!

My mom is a benefits manager and my dad works with computers (I know that's vague). I worked for my mom for a while but it's not what I want to do. I like working with people like she does but more so in a counseling setting.

My mum is a cleaning lady - and so was her mother. My dad was a gardener. How Downton Abbey am I?!! I never wanted to do either of those jobs - I always wanted to be a writer.

My dad works for a liquidation company doing a lot of their online sales. He owned his own hobby business before that.

My mom has been on disability for the last 15 years. Before that, she was a social worker.

I'm not interested in any of those professions

@highwire: Thanks! My mom is really awesome She only started really getting into trying to make some sort of income off her art in the past 5 years or so; but she is already getting a lot of good press/exposure so I hope things continue to go well for her! I wish I had half of her artistic talent!

Mom is a kindergarten teacher (previously preschool), dad is a maintenance man for a local county government. I definitely wouldn't want their jobs!

My dad was a Navy pilot, he then retired and became an executive at a government contracting company. He is now retired and teaches math. My mom is in procurement. I think my dad's job is awesome but I have no interest in either of my parents profession. However, I'm a CPA and I get my proficiency in math from my father.

Dad is a pastor and a physician.
Mom runs his office and is an acupuncturist.

They used to own a dry-cleaners, now they run a beauty supply store.

My Dad's a paramedic and my Mom is now a real estate agent, although she sent the bulk of her career as a business owner - she had two floral and gift boutiques.

My parents scared us away from ever owning any sort of business. I would actually have an interest in real estate, but am and will be a SAHM for the time being.

My mom is in school. My dad is a quality control manager at a plastic company.

My dad was a technician aircraft router for American Airlines for over 30 years. He worked to get planes routed for maintenance. My mom was a stay-at-home mom. I could totally see myself doing my mom's job not my dad's though. But I do neither -- I'm in marketing.

I LOVE reading these threads. I just love learning about all these different people doing different things all over the world!!!

My dad works in banking technology. I've never fully understood exactly what he does (and I'm in the tech industry!) but it has to do with programming languages and banking/loan transactions. He worked for a huge bank for 25 years but his technology was phased out. Luckily after a few years of unemployment (and a pack and ship store that went under) he got a job with a consulting company that works for smaller banks that are still on the old technology. Hopefully that job will take him the next few years until he can retire.

My mom went to school in Korea to be a nurse, but came over to America right after and obviously that degree wasn't valid here. So she had all kinds of random jobs... working for pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and finally she worked as a business manager for a small dental practice until a few years ago. Now she doesn't work. (except when she comes to be our childcare provider for LMW!!! paid in LOVE!!!)

Obviously since I never understood what my dad did, I didn't follow in his footsteps, but he did get me an internship during college at the bank he worked at (State Street), which pushed me in the direction of technology. Then through CS classes I figured out I didn't want to be a programmer...!! which led me to digital media.
