My Uncle's son just had a baby girl- middle name is James.
My mom sent me a pic and said "I am so confused - pink blanket but James as the middle name!"
I told her its 2016 - this is normal

Still about names but she hates the trend of telling everyone the child's name before birth. She called me the other day and said her friend "is calling the baby by her full name. The baby isn't even here yet. That is so weird!"

@mediagirl: oh I didn't realize this was a new thing! I will have to ask my mom if she shared our names before birth!

@Mamaof2: I think they couldn't when my mom was pregnant with us because they didn't have technology we have now to find out the gender!

My mom is surprisingly into trendy names and unique spellings
She suggested Myk for a boy (aka Mike) and also Bobbi for a girl. Bobbi is cute but not my style. Myk is....!!!???

I think my mom is into the "old man" style names, she suggested Henry for my second (a name I like, but we know someone by that name that ruins it for us)

They shared what they would name us if we were boy or girl (they didn't find out), but we don't share names on social media until the birth.

My mom is baffled when people choose ethnic names for their kids because she was firmly against it for my bro and I. For example, my cousin's girls have Arabic names (their mom is Muslim) and my cousins (mom's nieces & nephews) have American black names. Her peer group was part of the second wave to break the color lines in Corporate America and deliberstely named their kids all very popular mainstream names. She's still very sensitive to that and suggested Taylor for this baby when the sex was unknown.
I'm not sure how my dad or ILs feel about names because my mom is the only that gossips about what people name their children.

Courtney and Kelsey were mostly used for boy names about 50 years ago. Now they are mostly used for girl names. So this is not new to use boy names for girls.

As long as they are real names spelled "normally" my mom doesn't really care. My dad just loves to roll his eyes at anything so when I say the names of LO's friends he makes comments about them being so trendy it something (many of our friends have pretty popular but classic names, not terribly unusual!).
One thing I think is funny is the number of people our parents ages who have made comments about the baby's name- how you used to hear it all the time but never hear it nowadays. Wrong- her name is Grace and it was the 9th most popular name in our state last year. That was the main reason we almost didn't use it.
