For me, it meant tracking my cycles (because I am interested), not using protection, and having sex whenever we felt like it. When we switched to thinking 'hey, I'm ovulating, let's make sure to do it these days', I figured we had gone back to trying to conceive.

Some of us have little to no expectation of actually getting pregnant through just having sex, and it's a hell of a lot less depressing to not prevent than it is to actively try each month.
