What hyped brands have disappointed you? Which are your tried and true forever?

When I got pregnant, I jumped into the Tory Burch hype and bought 3 freakin pairs of flats thinking they would be so perfect while pregnant. They are uncomfortable and so overrated! They're pretty, sure. But I have to take them off when I'm driving bc those muthas hurt. All 3 damn pairs. And one pair is already coming apart and their CS sucks, long story short.

Another one that I'm just really disappointed with is Juicy. They got bought by Kohls and will only be sold at Kohls pretty soon, and even though that will SUPER de-value the brand, I still get emails from them charging insane prices and I'm like, "As if. Go ahead and scoot on over to Kohls!"

Le Creuset - I've had a couple of things crack over time. And trust me when I tell you they are not used a ton, lol. We also bought a wine opener from them that has been replaced 3 or 4 times by them and still is broken and we're too exhausted to send the latest in.

Stuff I love and will be brand loyal to:
JBrand (just got in some maternity jeans with the side panels and I am so in love!)
Frye
Ugg (I don't care, I love a damn Ugg!)
Gap - I'm sorry, but it's just always dependable.
Toms - LO and I both love our Toms - super comfy

What's yours?

Lately my love is Eddie Bauer jeans!! Their customer service is amazing. I had one pair that I wore for almost 4 years, and had a little threadbare spot in the fabric. I took it back to the store and they replaced it no questions asked

I have a love/hate relationship with Jcrew. Too much of my wardrobe is from there because I love the style (well, sometimes, though I think it's changed over the years), but I'm always so disappointed when it falls apart! I love the blazers though, more talking about the more "affordable" tops or dresses.

Completely agree with the TB flats comment. They hurt so bad! I had to walk quite a bit when I traveled for work at my last job, so maybe that was it? But, they were horrible.

Tried and true brands I'll always go back to:
    - Frye
    - AG and 7 jeans
    - Most things from Nordstrom (because their customer service cannot be beat!)
    - Gap, Banana and Target for basics (and very reasonable during a great sale)

    Meh:

Boden - I think some of their things are cute but for cottons and jersey, I don't think they're worth the price. I'll wait for sample sales.

a lot of factory stores like Gap, Banana or Ann Taylor/Loft - the quality isn't as good as the regular stores and honestly, I can find a sale and get a better price at the regular store!

True Religion - jeans are so cute! I love the details but the sizes are inconsistent and some styles have completely fallen apart on me (buttons falling off, decorative stitching wearing through)

    Favs:

Gap - love their basics, they fit well, always have a great sale, I feel like you can wash them a million times and the colors and styles hold up.

Lucky Brand shoes - awesome leather, well-made, cute styles. I don't love any of the clothes but the shoes are fantastic, I get so many compliments on my Lucky boots and sandals.

Yes to Carrots - I love this line of skincare and hair products. And they have great customer service. A bottle of face wash cracked on me, not only did they send me a new one, but also sent a bunch of other products for me to try.

(PS, Frye - I have a pair of my mothers from 1972 if that tells you how long these last.)

I actually just had something replaced by Le Creuset and I was really happy with the customer service. Granted, it shouldn't have broken in the first place, but at least they stood by the warranty with no questions asked. Going on with cookware, I am obsessed with my Staub Dutch oven. If I ever need to replace my Le Creuset one, I would get another Staub.

Agree with Frye boots I've had one pair for almost 4 years and they are still in marvelous condition, and so comfortable.

Labello lip balm. I've been using it for years. Sometimes I stray and try another brand, but I always go back to Labello.

    Birkenstock, Patagonia, Jbrand.

I used to only wear Jcrew but about ten years ago I felt like the quality declined and have stopped purchasing from them. Same with anthropologie- the quality just isn't there for me.

I have found Loft to be really inconsistent with sizing and quality. I have had t-shirts pill after 1 wash which really annoys me.

On the other hand, I've pretty much loved everything I've tried from Costco Kirkland Signature and REI brand. Both provide really excellent quality and value. Nordstrom is also a favorite, but that is more to do with their customer service than the actual quality of the merchandise.

Everything I've ever bought from llbean is great quality and their customer service is amazing. I'm not crazy outdoorsy but it makes me want to buy everything there!

@PrincessBaby: I gave away my TB flats because they were so uncomfortable! I couldn't wear them for more than an hour or two.

GOOD: Nine West heels. Without fail these are the most comfortable high heels for my small, high arch, very wide feet.

BAD: Henckel knives. I recently replaced some off brand ones that I got on sale at Macy's a few years ago. I'm so glad I kept the old ones (didn't know of a safe way to dispose them) because the Henckels are just more work than they should be.

I'm so annoyed with my Calphalon Unison. We bought it because it was supposed to be dishwasher safe. We moved into a home with a dishwasher 10 months ago, and almost all of the non-stick coating has come off. We're looking to get a few good All Clad pans to replace them, because I am not going back to Calphalon!

Also meh about my Sorel boots (super heavy and uncomfortable) and my Hunter boots (cracked after not very much wear). Annoying.

    coconut / 8430 posts

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: There are definitely different quality levels of Henckels knives (and Wusthof, etc.). Look for the German made Henckels. Those are far superior to the ones made elsewhere. Unfortunately, they also come with a much higher price tag.

@Ra: I'm glad it's not just me! I see them EVERYWHERE and I'm just like, "Why is no one ever limping around in them???"

@lamariniere: You actually helped get me into the Frye bandwagon:) I bought 2 pairs, the same in different colors, and I absolutely love them. It disgusts me that I bought those stupid TB flats bc I could have like 2 more pairs of fryes with the money I spent. My daughter loves to play in my closet and the TB flats are basically what she plays dress up in. That is their main use:(

@PrincessBaby: WHAT did you say about Juicy?! The horror!! I had no idea!

    coconut / 8430 posts

@PrincessBaby: One of my friends said she eventually got used to the TB flats after wearing them a little bit at a time (I think she also wore them with socks a few times to stretch them out). I think the big medallion hurt her foot at first but she got used to it. I just don't have the patience to do that for shoes

@wrkbrk: Oh they are going down! Sinking like a ship! Apparently the company that owned them also owns Kate Spade. Juicy revenues have went to crap over the past few years, and Kate Spade is obviously booming, so the company sold Juicy to Kohls and is pushing Kate Spade, launching stores all over. So JC will only be sold in Kohls, I think it's starting very soon. They shut down all of the bricks and mortar stores too during 2014. I have LOVED JC for so long, I have like 8 of those (now worthless) jogging suits. And now, I know it sounds snobby, but I have totally broken up with them because they fell so far, so hard. The Kohls thing totally made them lose all of their luster to me. And this is SUPER snobby, but I've worn Viva La Juicy perfume for years and totally loved it, and I haven't worn it in a long time because it's about to be "cheap" perfume and so I've been on the hunt for a new signature perfume. I KNOW it's awful, but I can't wear Kohls perfume. I'm horrible. I know.
ETA: And it really annoys me that they are sending emails and still running the website with super exorbitant prices - today I got one for 40% off the whole site (they are desperate) and I took a look and everything is still hight. It's like they're trying to trick customers out of a few more dollars before they totally go bust, hoping most people don't know that they're going to crap.

@sunny: Right? I mean, as much as they are, I think they should land at my doorstep being super comfortable! I shouldn't have to "work on them." It actually REALLY makes me sick to think about bc they were totally a waste.

  17. wrkbrk

    pomelo / 5084 posts

@PrincessBaby: It's not awful! I feel exactly the same way! I used to love going into the little Juicy boutique because there is only one in my town and now??? ACK! I have a Juicy bag I used (still, yes, ha) for work ... boo. Isn't KS doing something weird, too, like selling to Gap??

@PrincessBaby: If you want to try insanely comfortable, cute flats, try Tieks. I'm obsessed. They're pricey (but not TB pricey) but they are my favorites by far.

@wrkbrk: Is your JC store still open? They closed ours this summer...Yeah it makes me not want to use any of JC stuff! I gave all of my JC purses to my Mom (bless her heart, she doesn't know about all this scandal).

@LovelyPlum: yes to the Calphalon Unison! We bought a whole set after our wedding and within a few months all the pots were destroyed, and we didn't even put them in the dishwasher that often. You should have seen the look on the faces of the staff at Bed Bath when we came to return it! They couldn't believe how destroyed it was.

We returned it and got Calphalon Tri-Ply stainless set and have been really happy with them!

Hunter boots- I am a photographer and work outside in Oregon in all terrains and conditions, they are so comfortable and the quality is amazing.
Tiffanys- I wear/buy/own very few pieces of jewelry. I love their quality and design that is current and ages well.

    For me, the good:
Kate Spade - everything I've bought from them has lasted a long time
Burberry - I bought a scarf about 13 years ago that is just now needing to be replaced and my other items are still in good shape.
Old Navy - honestly, I buy most of my jeans there b/c they're inexpensive and hold up for quite a while. I hate spending money on jeans!
Frye - I had the best pair of black flats from them that finally died one day!
Kiehl's - been using their stuff since college and it's all amazing! Especially the lip balm - it's the only one I'll use.

    The bad:
Rebecca Minkoff - I bought a pair of shoes that split apart at the top on the first wear. But the customer service was good and they refunded me very quickly
    J. Crew - I hate to say it b/c I am a fan but recently have noticed some of my items getting small holes in them

@PrincessBaby: Kohls has bought a number of struggling luxury brands in the past few years. Rock & Republic went bankrupt and now their trademark/IP is also Kohls.

@sunny: I developed two products for Kirkland Signature at two different companies. They push for top of the line quality in everything. Getting a KS contract is a blessing and a curse.

Lately I've been all about Nordstrom Rack's website. I'm not really into clothes but I love not having to bother with Ross when Nordstrom stuff is cheaper.

This post made me look at my TB invoice and I got one pair on sale/markdown and the other two were that "spend x amount and get 20% off total purchase" thing and 1 pair wouldn't have qualified so that makes me feel a little bit better.

Maybe everyone buys them and then are stuck with them even though they break bones, and so they still wear them and with every step they think "$225. Just ignore the pain." I just can't do that! Also no one talks about it. Any time I've ever complimented anyone on their flats (I have a lot doctors that I call on for work that wear them every day), no one has ever copped to the pain. If someone compliments me on mine, I"ll be sure to warn them. "I hope you have a podiatrist!"

All the TB shoes on Nordstrom have 4.5 - 5 stars. There is some type of conspiracy going on here.

@LovelyPlum: My Calaplon Unison is a mess. They already replaced it once under warranty and it needs replacing again the outside look terrible and I follow their directions, we paid extra for it because it could go in the dishwasher. We got our first set just after it came out and when they replaced it they were supposed to have made it better. Uh sorry guys no dice.

Tried and true: Steve madden. I probably have 20 pairs of SM shoes and I have yet to find another shoe brand I love as much. Perfect fit for me every time, comfy, and always on trend.

Nars. Love every single product. Such great pigment and stays on so long.

Though not technically a brand, I also love pretty much anything from Nordstrom. Shattered my ceramic watch into about 100 pieces over a year after I got it and they gave me the money back to buy a new watch of my choice. The customer service/return policy lets you find your tried and true brands.

I agree with TB flats. They're horrible! I ended up donating mine, after I got annoyed with myself for buying them in the first place.

I used to be OBSESSED with Juicy! I had so many things... but the quality of the velour tracksuits is really, really bad. $400 for a tracksuit that falls apart in less than a year?! And I never wore them outside of the house either.

I'm suprised with the Le Crueset issues. I've had mine for years and use it all over and over again and it's great.

One thing I can't get into is Lululemon yoga pants and leggings... I just don't think they're that special. Also OPI nail polish. I have probably 40+ bottles and I always end up going back to Essie or China Glaze.

Brands I love and have stayed loyal to: Burberry, Louis Vuitton, BMW, Michael Kors (even when I have had issues their customer service makes up for it), Birks (Canadian jewelry store), NARS
