Is anyone following what's going on in Paris? Just saw at least 35 killed and 100 hostages being held at multiple locations? It's hard to grasp the details, there is so much information flying around, but how terrifying. My thoughts are with any who may be in Paris or have family there.

I'm just watching the news coverage now. Terrible. Three locations - a restaurant (gun fire, people killed), outside a football stadium (grenades?) and an Eagles of Death Metal gig in a theatre (two gunmen opened fire, killed people and now have 100 hostages).
So awful.

OMG. I can't believe it didn't hit me until now, but one of my closest friends from high school is studying abroad there this semester. I just messaged her to make sure she's ok

My friend lives there, she, her fiancé and baby are safe, but I guess they have some friends in that concert hall and are still waiting to hear if they got out or not. Terrifying.

My sister is there. She said she was very close close to one of the terrorist sites and had to run with the police. Some guy got her to his car and she is safe now at her Airbnb. Thanks for posting or I wouldn't have known!

I'm home now and watching CNN. It's just hard to even grasp. At least 149 dead? My heart goes out to the whole city, especially those who have lost loved ones.

Our friend is fine, her brother just left the airport right before the attacks started. So, everyone we know is ok. Thankfully.

Does anyone else miss being a teenager today? When 9/11 happened I wasn't even scared. I just believed the government would protect us. I don't know why, considering what had just happened. But it seemed like an anomaly. Like nothing like that could happen again. But it keeps happening. And I've lost my sense of invincibility and it sucks. I can't imagine what the people in Paris are feeling today, the absolute terror. I'm a bit scared for the future today. What things are coming to with extremist groups. How much worse, and closer to home it could get.

@Mae: I was a senior in college on 9/11, and remember feeling shaken to the core that afternoon. It was terribly unsettling.
The scene in Paris is just gut-wrenching.

@Mae: I was in my second year of military college, and in my third year of service when the 9/11 attacks happened. I definitely didn't feel safe. A few of my classmates later died in Afghanistan.
This is so terrible. I have no other words...

@Mae: no. I was scared to death on 9/11. My brother worked quite near the towers and it took us forever to get in touch with him.
I'm terrified for the people of Paris and those killed and injured in these attacks.

@Mae: I didn't mean my comment to be taken that way, either. You definitely weren't a dumbass in not grasping the magnitude of how quickly our world would change. Although I was scared, I definitely didn't fully grasp the consequences, myself, even though I was a bit older.
I have had the thought over the last year (because of the centennial of the start of WWI) that there was such a innocence in the thinking that that war would be completed by Christmas, with young men rushing off to war for love of king and country, etc. They had no idea. 14 years ago, I don't know if we really had any idea either. And now one war has begat another, with attacks occurring globally against innocent civilians.
