Mmm... love their flavored coffees like coconut, raspberry, blueberry. And their plain is delish too. And I'm a sucker for chocolate chip muffins.

@Anagram: I live in TX too, where are these mom and pop doughnut places you speak of, I want to find one! I am not a Shipleys fan at all, probably because I was "assimilated" to DD when living in the NE and miss it terribly.

While I do prefer mom & pop donut places much more, we don't have any of those around here. We just got a DD, and we bought some reg glazed donuts last night, and they were really good! I'd never had them before but was pleasantly surprised. I do think Krispy Kreme is better.

@T-Mom: where in Texas do you live? I used to live in Dallas and work in Irving and I had 2 shops withing 3 blocks of my house and two more near my work. There's pretty much always a no name, no yelped donut shop in every strip mall.

@T-Mom: @Anagram: Haha, I live in the Dallas area and I thought it was normal to have a donut place on every corner! I just look for "DONUTS" to be spelled out in big red or yellow letters and they're always delish. I like Shipley's a lot and Dunkin is good, though not my fav...but bonus points for all the flavors I can add into coffee! And for having a Baskin Robbins attached.

Just an affordable (and not nearly as strong) alternative to Starbucks, for me!

Our regular order (breakfast for sharing in the car on the way to work) is: Large iced caramel mocha, half ice, skim milk; big n toasty; 1 boston cream donut!

@Anagram: Wow that is so cool! I live in Houston.. maybe there are a bunch and I should just pay more attention! There are a ton of chain kolache places and maybe 3 DD's in the entire city. The DD I found and was so excited to try was terrible.

@T-Mom: I'm such a librarian....I got so curious about the donut store/Korean owners situation and wondered if I was making it up. But apparently not!

DD always adds the right amount of cream and sugar to your coffee. I like the munchkins aka donut holes.

I love dd for their coffee - honestly prefer it to Starbucks. But the donuts are whatever - I've visited LA a few times and I loved the random homemade donut shops so much better than dd so I don't know what the big deal is either!

Coffee and donuts! I love their hazelnut iced and hot coffees.

So much better than Starbucks coffee which tastes like burnt coffee. I can't bash Starbucks that much because I do love their Salted Caramel Lattes! Lattes, mochas and espresso is good but regular coffee??? No way.

As for donuts, I do like Krispy Kreme over DD but DD is better than the other donuts here in Seattle.

Munchkins! Honestly, dunks is just such a staple in new england that it's like comfort food/drink.

@Anagram: have you been to Doughnut Plant in NYC? Their creme brûlée donuts are my favorite. PB&J and tres leches are good too... Plus all their seasonal doughnuts! I think most good doughnuts in NYC don't come from mom and pop doughnut places, but from bakeries/restos that sell other baked goods too. My friend loves doughnuts and used to tour the city for the best ones every summer (usually she would check out places based on NYT reviews or food blogs).

I'm not excited about Dunkin' coming to CA. When I lived in NYC I realized that their iced coffee drinks are just laden with sugar and their donuts are usually stale.

DD is okay. I do like their hashbrowns and their lattes and stuff are fine but it's not like it's great coffee; I think they are so popular because they are basically on every block in new England! I prefer Krispie kreme donuts, and stronger coffee than they offer myself.

I'm from MA so I should be a huge fan. But the only thing I really love from DD is their chocolate coconut donut. So freaking good. I'm not a coffee drinker but my whole family up in MA loves their iced coffee.
