Just curious
I've never been and we'd ideally like to go whilst we only have one LO. We were thinking early 2016 when she's around 2.5yrs, or do you think that is too young? I know she won't remember it at that age, but will she be into it?

We started going when mine was 6 months old. Around 2 he got into the characters a lot more. It was really neat watching him. At 3 now he just runs the park.
We live close so it isn't a hotel or travel thing, so that helps. He also doesn't need naps and can stay up late (last time we went to dland, we did dumbo at 10 pm). So it is up to you.
If you want to go, I wouldn't let your little one stop you or not. We went at 6 months old for me (halloween at dland).

Given how expensive it is, I think our plan is to wait until LO is five or so.

Not until our kids could have great memories from it! Probably around 6 or 7, honestly. We live far away so it would be a once in a childhood type vacation and I would want it to be meaningful.

It depends on if this will only be a one time trip vs once every few years. We will probably make it a one time trip, so I would say the youngest kid would have to be 5.

We are going in Nov and LO will be 19mths. We wanted to go while she was free (flight and ticket).

I don't think 2.5 is too young; she should have a great time there, even if she doesn't remember it.
We took LO for the first time at 14 months, but we were in CA visiting friends and family anyway so it wasn't a special trip just to Disney.
The good thing about going when she is 2.5 is that she will be free! There's almost $100 saved right there!

We were in Florida with extended family this summer and did a couple half days at Magic Kingdom with our 2 month LO and his 25 month cousin. It was fine and fun, but not the big Disney magical experience. Our 2 year old nephew didn't really even know what Disney is or anything, and still needed naps to get through the day, so it wasn't really worth it. If I were planning a trip especially to see Disney I'd wait till LO knows who all the characters are and can handle a whole day walking out in the sun without naps or complaints. Maybe more like 7-8 years old, honestly!

Depends on the kid, but personally I would say at least 5 or 6. I love love love Disney, and honestly it would be a huge bummer for me to go and have to miss some of my favorite rides/shows due to to height restrictions, bed times, stuff that they're just too little for (Disney does everything BIG and it can be overwhelming for a little one - my SIL took my nephew at 2.5 and there were so many things he thought were scary, but it certainly depends on the child,) etc. You can always do the child swap, but for me that takes away a lot of the fun, I'd rather just save my money and wait until they're a bit older.
Our plan is to take our kids for the first time when the oldest will have just turned 7 and our youngest will be almost 6. But we live on the other side of the country and I'm a SAHM at the moment, so cost is a big factor. If we were going to be in the area anyways or weren't too far away I would have different feelings about it! DH doesn't believe that I'm going to be able to wait as long as I'm currently saying...we'll see, haha!

We just talked about this and since it will probably be a once in a lifetime trip for us, we will wait until they are at least 6 and 8.

Kids are free until 3 so I think that'd be a perfect time to go! My cousin just took her 1 year old and she LOVED it.

We live in Central Fl, so it's not a big deal to do disney regularly. We've been with our son 3 times since he was born, and we're planning on taking him again for his 3rd birthday. Honestly, the times we've been so far have still been for us. He gets overwhelmed quickly and we almost always leave just after lunch. But we live close so it's not a big deal. If I had to actually travel far to get there, is wait until at least 4, unless I just had money to blow. Disney is not cheap by any means. I'm sure fun could be had at 2.5 (my son is 2.5 now), but I wouldn't personally spend the time and money getting there until my kid could happily make it most of the day and remember.

We are taking my lo in a few weeks when she is just shy of 2 years old. I don't think she will remember it but I think she will really enjoy it. She is into Mickey mouse clubhouse, doc mcstuffins and Sofia the first on Disney junior. We took her to this tiny park a few days ago that had a train that rode through this wooded area and went thru tunnels and bridges and stopped in a "town" that was all toddler sized and she was fascinated by it. She won't remember forever but she has asked about it or mentioned it a bunch of times since then.

We took LO this year when he was a little shy of 2 years old. We are planning on going again next fall/winter, he will be 3.5 and DD will be almost 1.

Isnt it free before three?
I plan on taking LO before he turns 3 for that reason alone. Also we get cheap flights from NYC and I love going to Florida.

I don't think it's too young! We live so close to Disneyland people take their infants. And by 2, the LOs all seem to be really into it, remember rides, characters, specifics.

We went when LO 1 was almost 2.5 and LO 2 was 1 and we had a blast. We live nearby and spent the whole day at the park. LO 1 really enjoyed the rides and the lines weren't bad on a weekday.

We recently took her to a theme park in Korea and she had a great time (she's 2.5). She just barely met the height requirements for the youngest rides, so there weren't too many we could go on, but she loved the rides we did go on. Initially, I wanted to take her to Disney around age 3, but now I'm re-thinking and we will likely go when she is 4. She was terrified of all the costumed characters so I can imagine she would flip out if she saw all the Disney characters. I also want to wait until she's taller so she can go on more rides.

We took LO in May a few weeks before her 2nd bday. We just really wanted a vacation and figured Disney would keep her happy and all of us entertained. We drove down from NH which was an adventure in itself lol. She did wonderful and there were some moments that me and her dad will cherish forever, but I do think she was a little to young to truly enjoy it. We plan on going back when she's around 6. I will say I think if we went next May when she will be 3, she would be way more into it than last year. Just in the past month she sings all the disney songs and pretends to be a princess. Every time we see that castle at the beginning of a disney movie she says, "Mama, Lala, Dada, remember?!" So she does have the memory of the fireworks at Magic Kingdom.

Probably around 18 months - I want them to eat normal food. I don't want to have to deal with bottles.

My parents started taking us when we were 2 and we went pretty much every year. I think I will do the same - once dd is out of diapers!

5! Not napping and can remember it. Not spending all that money for nothing.

We regularly take family vacations, but neither my husband or I are big Disney people. That said, my mom is already talking about a Disney vacation and I sure the kids would love it. My vote is that when our youngest is at least 4, we would consider it!

We went recently. DD was 3 yrs 4 months old and DS was 19 months old. we'll probably go again when the kids are 4 and 6. It was fun and magical, but too stinkin hot when we went.

@illumina: we took our almost 2 year old in august. She turned two a coupe weeks later. We had a BLAST!!! She could ride almost everything in Magic Kingdom and she is still talking about several of the rides and sings It's a Small World all the time. I thought it was great!
pomegranate / 3791 posts
Tip though, for those saying they'll take them when they don't need naps anymore? Yeah, they might still need a nap. At the very least, take a break in the middle of the day to go back to the hotel so they can rest, swim, nap if they're tired, etc. Otherwise you're bound to end up with a child having a total meltdown and no one having any fun, especially in the hotter parts of the year!

I am hoping to skip that entirely. Maybe his grandparents will want to take him.

we took Olive when she was 1 1/2 because she was free! She was able to enjoy many of the rides and had a blast.
i would take them just before 2nd birthday when they are free, and then again at 4.

We went a couple weeks ago and she was 6 months. We rode a couple of rides but pirates and snow white scared her. It was more fun dressing her up as a princess everyday Oh and she got to eat at blue bayou which she loved, got a giant sucker which she loved even more. I really think she enjoyed hetself!

You don't know until you try it. We went last year at 2 years 9 months and are back now at 3 years 9 months. Anything is possible if you are strategic.

4 if this was our main annual vacation.
However, given we live just 3 hours away from DW, and have gone to DW or Universal Studios for a long weekend, our LO may be younger.

We are a huge disney family and go every year but I don't have a little one yet so take what I say with a grain of salt. Our first trip will probably be around LO's first birthday and we will probably go every year for at least a few days.
I think at 2.5 your LO would have a blast, BIL and his wife took their boys at almost 2 and 1 and the oldest remembers bits and pieces and talks about it still two years later.
pomelo / 5660 posts
@looch: agree.
I think you just need to set some realistic goals if you take a younger child. I know that we were ambitious and our next trip we will be realistic.

My minimum is when DS can recognize the characters and not be scared of them. I'm assuming that age will be around 3? My parents have a winter home in FL not too far away from Disney and we go there every winter, plus DH is a huge Disney and theme park fan.
When I was little my parents took us for the first time when I was 7 and my brother was 2. He spent most of it in the stroller and sleeping.

We took my DD to WDW when she was 7 months. We have so many adorable pictures from that trip, she wasn't afraid of the characters at all. It seemed kind of silly to take a 7 month old but she loves looking at the pictures now and we had a great time. We went to Disneyland last summer she was 4 and she still talks about going back.
pineapple / 12526 posts
I'd say 4/5 minimum. Its not something I could see us affording to do a lot, so I want her to remember it.
