This doesn't ring a bell for me. Was it fun to be a wagon leader and lead a party of settlers over the Oregon Trail? What happened: would people get hungry and eat each other?
I would love to learn more about Oregon Trail! The good stuff... not what's in the Wikipedia article.

It was so fun! You had to figure out, how to spend the little money you had (buy wagon, oxen, food). You had to make sure your team of settlers survived. People would die of starvation or dysentery. You won if you made it to Oregon alive!

hahahaha nooo it was totally kid-friendly. I was only 8 or 9 when I played the game.
Yeah basically you are the wagon leader and have a few others passengers with you. You lead them down the oregon trail. There are tons of bad things that can happen along the way such a snakebites, crossing rivers, deadly illnesses etc. But you have to get as much of your family there as you can without dying lol

Oh my God I can't believe you didn't play Oregon trail!!! You had to make sure your family survived to trek out west! The most common causes of death were starvation/dehydration and snake bites. And man was it risky to ford a stream in your wagon!!! Even if you survived you usually lost most of your cargo!

It was definitely well loved by boys, too. I mean it was all about hunting, fording rivers, trading, and hoping you don't die of dysentary. Good stuff.

I think we even loaded the game through a floppy disk. It's old school!
I always died. I've always wondered if you could actually beat the game. If I didn't die of dysentery, I drowned trying to cross a river.

How did you never play Oregon Trail? We actually have an old school Mac that DH bought off of eBay, and we have Oregon trail and number munchers for it!

@mrbee: I just want you to know that I was remarking to my hubs that I couldn't believe you never heard of Oregon trail and my husband never heard of it either!!! We are the exact same age and grew up only about an hour apart from each other. I feel like I don't even know him right now!

@mrbee: his parents didnt have a ton of money and weren't tech saavy so I don't think they had a computer in the house until he was in high school. And we didn't play in school like some others have mentioned.

AhhH! I grew up on Oregon Trail! I even did an activity with my 8th graders this year where they had different fate cards and traveled on the Oregon Trail...bitten by a snake, lost a family member in the river, died of cholera, etc...and they loved it!

I was in Washington state in the early 80s and we were playing it then. It was probably the only/first computer game they sold as educational to the elementary schools. That was the only thing on the computer at school. So it was a huge privilege to play. Maybe it was only on the west coast at the time since most of the programming development was based in Seattle/Silicon Valley.
ETA: I guess it depended on how techie your school was.

Ahhh Oregon Trail is legen. dary! I always died of dysentery or my kids ran out of oats and died of starvation. I was in elementary school from 85-90 but I remember playing it most in middle school.

@mrbee, you went to elementary school in northern Virginia, right? I did, too - Fairfax County Public Schools - and I distinctly remember playing Oregon Trail in school as part of our introduction to becoming computer-savvy in 4th and 5th grade at least. So, that would have been around 1993-1995. You must have played it, I think we're around the same age? Maybe you have a hole in your memory!
