Mine would be to run a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary. It's always been a dream of mine but having had the chance to rescue so many dogs here in the Philippines, I know more than ever that it is something I want to do in this lifetime.

Well, my job is/used to be my dream job....it's just my current school is not the best fit for me. It's boring. I need a small change, but I still love, love, love being a school librarian. Maybe my heart is moving more towards elementary and away from older kids.

@Anagram: I loved, loved, loved the idea of being a librarian and started getting my Masters in Library and Information Science while I was the temporary librarian position for a year. I was bored and I kept looking at the clock. That's even with some teaching and having a library club. I said I would go back later and pick it up when I was older. So I guess we can swap jobs then!

newborn/family photography. I tried to make it work (+ weddings) for a few years, but I just couldn't make enough money. And I'm not really that interested in doing weddings anymore-- which was the bigger money maker. It's REALLY hard to make it as a newborn/family photog if you need to make a real salary (not just, a bit extra to help out).

@808love: haha! totally. We moved cross country 4 years ago, and my old job was in an enormous school system in a large middle schools--like we had 1300 students. Since it was a big school system, there was a whole district wide library program--a lot of standards, uniform goals and programs, we had a library coordinator and big budgets. We would have author visits and we were SO busy--we circulated over 10k books a month. My current school has about 300 students, it's a one woman show (me), no one knows what I do and I have a miniscule budget. I do teach elective classes now, since it's a small school but that's not really where my heart is at. There's a public library literally across the street, so if we don't have something kids don't put it on hold, they just buy it on their kindle or go across the street. And where I work now is a lot more "old school". I don't know...I have great coworkers and the kids are sweet, I'm just bored.

@808love: At my old school, there was no time to be bored and look at the clock. My schedule was PACKED....I would have about 5 minutes break between classes coming in-and if I had longer down periods, I had things I had to get done--book orders, planning author visits, weeding the collection.....because I had a library coordinator over me who was making sure we did all those things by certain deadlines. I thrive with that kind of schedule.
I think at my current school the librarian before me hadn't ordered anything or weeded anything or changed anything in about a decade. And the budget it tiny. So sometimes I feel like I could do nothing and no one would notice. It's demotivating.

@Anagram: Yah, hang on for that breath of fresh air!! We all need a good librarian and middle school is 'special'. Too bad we couldn't just do a job swap for a year. You might see grass is not that much greener on the other (report cards) side.

Astronomer or physicist. I unfortunately made a lot of decisions when I was younger to please others, so I never got to seriously pursue my true passion. Ended up as a software engineer and visual designer (and then a SAHM), but I should really be in a research field!

I would like to be a 5th-8th grade social studies teacher, with 3 conditions:
- A max student cap of 20 per class
- A mandatory, protected prep period of 45 min a day
- A responsive, smart, realistic, capable, fully-staffed administrative team.

I want a job that is wall-to-wall busy but ONLY from 8-5 or 9-6 and doesn't require taking any work home with you. I'm not sure what that job is--maybe something tied to markets, which are only open certain times?--but I'd be happy doing a LOT of things if they fit that description.

I would love to just be an accompanist. At a university, or for a few good choirs. Maybe throw in a few dedicated students. But it is hard to get the practice time in right now and it barely pays for babysitting. And I'm not sure full time jobs exist at my level.
