I have only been to one or two showers! but when friends have babies I love to get them a gift of "essentials" - saline drops, infant tylenol, wipes, etc. I usually try to tailor it based on what's left on the registry, too.

I don't really have a go-to gift. I usually look at the registry and try to pick out something practical rather than cute. The cute stuff I've bought (like a little outfit or a blanket), I never see. But the practical stuff always seems to be well used like diaper pails, diaper bags, etc. At most of the showers I've been to, the mom-to-be has gotten a million diapers, lotions, baby shampoos, and creams. I'm not sure why, but for those reasons, I would avoid those products even though they are very practical. They say you can't have too many, but honestly, who wants 8 bottles of diaper cream?

An exersaucer or awesome tummy time mat (especially if they have hardwood floors or tile in their living room).

I like to do the same thing @sorrycharlie: - usually some kind of basket/box/diaper organizer (whatever's on their registry usually) filled with tylenol, saline mist, boogie wipes, nose Frida, aquaphor, etc. I'll often add A+A swaddled or Swaddlemes if they have either on the registry, too. And of course at least one favorite board book!

A good friend or family member - baby carrier/wrap. Less close, something around $25-30 from their registry. And always a book.

For really close friends and family, I make a baby quilt!
For others, I do a basket/diaper organizer filled with essentials from the registry.

Mine really depends on how close I am to the mother to be but I had to name a go to gift it's the boppy with a cover or the kick and play piano mat.

Before I had a baby it was A&A blankets. Now that I have a baby-and we liked the A&A blankets but didn't use them for long-it's the Rock n Play. If it was someone I was really close to (or they didn't mind second hand), I'd try and get a Bjorn Babysitter bouncer, as that was my favorite piece of gear despite the price tag! I bought mine used:-).

A&A blankets! Something else on my "must have" list that's pretty inexpensive is a mirror for the car. I think a lot of baby items depend on the baby, but as long as the mama has a car, it's something that they'll definitely use!

I always shop from the registry. I go for AA blankets if they haven't been purchased or a mix of the "boring" stuff that no one else ever buys since it's usually useful.

My go to is books! For babies, usually Dr Seuss or Shell Silverstein. Although now that I have a baby, maybe a woombie since we love ours so much. And for close friends I make a jingly block with their name and birth info.

I usually get it off the registry, b/c you don't know if they were already gifted certain items, or have hand-me downs, etc.

bathtub (if it is family member or close friend)
filled with wash cloths, baby wash, bath toys, bath book, hooded towel and a bath thermometer.
If it is more of an acquaintance I get a bath toy scoop, soap, toys and wash cloths

I tend to go registry and if it's a close friend, I'll add a more personal item either handmade or from Etsy to the gift.

Boppy and covers is my go-to gift (when it's on their registry). But now I also throw in a NoseFrida now that I've been introduced to how amazing it is!

@sorrycharlie: I happened to have gifted the last three work friends the Sophie teether from their registry! So I guess that's my go to haha.
