For me, as long as there's a beach, warm sun, cocktail(s), and no plans, I'm in heaven
... and maybe a babysitter

Hmm. I like the idea of a tropical beach vacation but I think I'd get bored just lounging. We went mountain climbing on our honeymoon!
I think I'd really enjoy traveling around Europe, or an adventure vacation of some sort!

no kids =)
Seriously though...now that we have kids "vacation" is never really a "break" its hard work!!!

Getting away from home for whatever reason is a vacation to me!
Awhile ago, I would have said hot weather + beach.

@Mamaof2: I couldn't agree more! It's no longer a vacation when there are kids... well, not *my* idea of vacation. There's no relaxing.

Anywhere away from extended family and normal life responsibilities. I don't consider going to visit family a real vacation, since there are always obligations and stress!

I'll go against the grain and say that the idea of lounging on a beach for several days in a row bores me to tears. I can do that for half a day, max. An all-inclusive resort would be the death of me, lol.
My ideal vacation is one filled with a lot of (but not too many) activities--a good mix of both physical and cultural. I love just walking around a getting lost, and am happy to just go to a bus or train station and buy the ticket to the destination that leaves first. I've had some of my best trips that way!

I need a mix. I like sitting on the beach for a day or so before I get bored. I need something fun (para sailing, jet skiing, going on a tour, etc.) to balance it out.

Beach, booze, books. In that order. No humidity ranks pretty high too.

@yoursilverlining: agreed, just somewhere away from my day to day duties! And no family. I did 2 weeks with my parents on our annual vacation and it was fun sucking!

@MediaNaranja: I'm with you! I can barely last two hours sitting on a beach. I need adventure in my vacations - backpacking, hiking, excursions. Something outdoors is my favorite!

Anywhere where I don't have to cook or clean! Love both beach vacations and touring/hiking as long as the above conditions are met- so no apartment rentals for me!

@JessKas: I love hiking and exploring too, but I consider those "trips" not "vacations"

I like to have a good mix of downtime and doing stuff, but frequently I am go-go-go on vacations because I want to see everything. Though once I had a full sightseeing agenda planned and abandoned it all to rent a lounger and nap on the beach all day. It was the best decision.

Before: exploring, taking pictures, trying new food
Now: no schedule, food cooked for me, somewhere warm, palm trees a plus

I'm with everyone else who loves sun, beach, books, and drinks! DH likes to be adventurous though. We usually compromise and are active for a few hours followed by good old fashioned lazy time at the beach or pool.
