I had an angel food doll cake. It was baked in a round bowl and then turned upside down and put a doll in the middle (up to her waist). Then the cake was iced to look like the cake was the dolls dress. I loved it. My mom made my LO one for her first birthday!

My mom always made these awesome elaborate cakes for us. Like once she made me Castle Grayskull (from He-Man). Another time she made a popple. She did it all freehand. She also handmade all of our Halloween costumes. She's amazing.

She made different kinds. But my favorite was when she'd make an ice cream cake, with three different flavors of ice cream, lady fingers on the side, and the top was a hard chocolate with sprinkles on top. Yum!

I always got an icecream cake for my birthday from Dairy Queen! Still do to this day actually! My birthday is always one of the hottest days of the year, so everyone loves it too.

My mum used to make them into the shape of whatever I was into that year... so I remember once I had Noddy in his car, the year I started playing the trombone she made one from cake.. for my 18th she made a cake replica of me sprawled out drunk, pint in one hand, cigarette in the other - it was so exaggerated : ) I started making personalised cakes for my niece's birthdays, I love them!

In junior high my Mom was taking Wilton cake decorating classes and baked and decorated me a New Kids on the Block cake. It was freaking unbelievable - all my friends were sooooo jealous!

I always had a strawberry cake with white chocolate mousse and shavings on top, obviously not homemade!

It'd be a cake from either wal-mart or Sam's with whipped frosting that was divided in half via frosting. My brother and I have the same birthday so the cake was always half pink and half blue.

I had a Vietnamese/French fruit tart from a local bakery (Le Croissant Dore). Typical dessert around Little Saigon! I'll try to find a pic.

Is it weird that I remember what kind of cake I had EVERY single year? lol My mom went to a lot of effort to make sure my birthdays were memorable, usually.

Although I like cake, I like bread pudding (no raisins) even more - that was my go to birthday cake growing up.

@Arden: Awh, that's so sweet that you remember all the cakes! I hope to make LO's birthdays/cakes special enough that she'll remember each one later, too
And LOL about the croissant!
I always had a regular grocery store cake... sometimes an ice-cream cake from Dairy Queen and I remember thinking that was so special!
When I got older, we started getting Costco cakes (except they're so ginormous, we'd need an army to finish it).
MMM...cake...

we had the best birthday cakes because my mom's coworker was a part-time cake decorator. One year, my sister had this huge teddy bear shaped cake and I had this barbie princess cake, etc. This was the 80's before folks really did creative things with cake. I don't remember what the cake tasted like, but those cakes were so special!
