When you found out you were pregnant (or even before), did you get this book? Did you find it useful? Are there better books out there?

I didn't. i skimmed through it at the bookstore, but you can find all the info in the book online. I signed up for babycenter and get weekly updates

Nope. I read the TTC one: What to Expect Before your Expecting. And I liked it a lot.
I have the What to Expect app on my phone, also.

I skimmed it and put it back. I brought home the Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy (something like that.)

That book sucked! I love this book: http://www.amazon.com/Pregnancy-Childbirth-Newborn-Complete-medically/dp/074321241X
and know one of the authors (took my newborn class from her). There's a new edition and I trust them implicitly. Ann was so right on in everything she taught us in baby class!

I got it as a gift, and I did not care for it. I prefer the week by week book I recieved and also just look stuff up online. I have noticed a lot of stuff contridict each other so I was getting annoyed.

I have the Mayo Clinic guide and have found it to be pretty useful. I was scared away from the What to Expect after hearing lots of negative reviews.

Thanks ladies! I'll have to stop by the bookstore and see if they have the Mayo Clinic one.

I started reading it before I got pregnant, but am finding that most of the info in the book can be found online from my babycenter updates or here on the hive! I also bought the book that @Mrs. Jacks recommended, which seems a bit more comprehensive.

I didn't like it because I thought it was overly cautious about a lot of things. I bought the Mayo Clinic book and liked it, but as pp said, you can find all the info on sites like babycenter.

Nope. I found it kind of condescending and annoying.
I second Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn. That was a good one. I also read The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and Pregnancy Week by Week.

I had it in my first two pregnancy's and I likes. I liked a Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy, much less information , but more intertaining. I had donated my books when we thought we were done. This time I am getting most of my information online or the binder my doctor's office gave me.

Yeah, I've found it to be really redundant. There's much less information in there than what there is on things like babycenter, and their website is more informative than the book.

My best friend gave me hers, but I never really read it. I got Natural Hospital Birth and Ina May's Guide to Childbirth instead.

I do have it (I was told it was the pregnancy Bible!) and quite honestly don't even pick it up that often. I much prefer the Week-by-Week Guide: http://www.amazon.com/Your-Pregnancy-Week-Edition-Series/dp/0738214647/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340748354&sr=8-1&keywords=week+by+week+pregnancy.

another vote for Mayo Clinic's Guide to Health Pregnancy. my doctor recommended it and rolled her eyes when talking about What to Expect, and said a lot of stuff in there is unnecessarily inflammatory.

Hahaha so glad everyone hates that book as much as I do. Alarmist and obnoxious. I also recommend the Mayo guide!

I was told not to read this book, so I avoided it, even though a couple of people tried to pass it to me.

I bought Expecting 411 and What to Expect but I never read What to Expect...it was too dated and boring!
persimmon / 1035 posts
i bought it as soon as i had a positive test. i don't hate it as much as everyone here seems to, but i do find it boring to read. it was more entertaining in the first couple of weeks i got pregnant because i seriously knew nothing and so it was all new info for me. now i find between my weekly emails, daily app tips, and googling online, i am reading the same info everywhere.
My friend lent me the Dr. Oz book: You: Being pregnant (or something like that) and i just started it but so far i like it more than WTE as it is written in a more captivating style.

I have the app, which is fine (nothing super informative but nice.) I have Mayo Clinic and Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Newborn.
Truth is I just look most stuff up online....

I got it as a gift as well...it's alright...I ended up looking online most of the times because it's much easier with an iPhone
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Wow, thanks girls! I'll definitely look for the Mayo Clinic book and the Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn book and skip What To Expect!

I have the app on my phone with the daily updates...But I just borrowed books from a friend who had already had a baby ( You being Pregnant and Pregnency week by week). Although I didn't read them all the way through. The only pregnancy book I've read cover to cover is Ina May's guide to natural childbirth.

I use the app on my phone, but didn't buy the book. I do most of my research/reading via real life blogs, HB, and online baby resources

I just wanted to say thanks to you ladies! I bought the Mayo Clinic book and I LOVE it!!!
pomelo / 5331 posts
I bought it on the Kindle but I didn't care for the tone or the depth of info. I love the Mayo Clinic book but looks like you already got that one! YaY!

One of my sweet friends mailed me the Mayo Clinic book. I love it! I have heard that What to Expect makes you too nervous so have stayed away.

No I never read this book. I mostly used the internet for information especially forums like this and weddingbee. The only books I bought during pregnancy were about bradley birth
