We go to outside restaurants a lot because we like to bring our dog. We know we're risking that someone might be sitting outside. I hate it. But I don't feel like I have the right to tell them not to. Its perfectly legal. So I usually just take lo for a little walk.

I would do the same. It's their right to smoke and not my place to ask them to stop.

Unfortunately they're allowed to smoke outside so we just walk away. We've never eaten at an outdoor restaurant with LO--I prefer eating inside.

@chopsuey119: I prefer outside if the weather is nice. We can bring our dog, and I don't feel as bad if my lo is noisy.

I give them the death stare! It might be their right to smoke but it's rude to do it where the smoke goes over other people - that does impact on others.

If they were right next to me I would ask to change tables. or the wind was blowing in our direction I would probably ask to move back inside.

As a former smoker, I NEVER smoked near people because I personally didn't feel it was right to expose others to my habit. If I happened to be smoking and a family or children were approaching, I would either put my cigarette out or move somewhere else. Now that I'm a mother, I've never asked anyone to move or anything like that because people have a right to smoke. Most of the time, people who are smoking and see me with a baby will do their best to wave the smoke away or something. Just once did a person just continue blowing smoke our way at which point, I whipped around and gave a dirty look before walking away.

Ditto @rubies. Thankfully, in MI you're not allowed to smoke even in outdoor areas if food is served. So as long as we don't sit near the exit/entrance way, I think we'll be okay!
