Growing up, I almost never used any medicine at all unless I had an extremely high fever. My mom's general philosophy was, just rest and drink lots of water and you will eventually get better.
It took me years before I would take a painkiller for even a very bad headache. Once I started getting regular bad headaches though, all that reticence went out the window and my philosophy became GIVE ME ALL THE PILLS!! But the pills didn't do much for my headaches, so now I'm mostly back to my mom's philosophy.
For my kids of course if the fever is high, we go straight to the painkillers. If the fever isn't too high, I sometimes lean towards a "wait and see" approach involving rest and lots of water. It took me a while to realize that this came straight out of my childhood experiences!
Did you take a lot of painkillers growing up? What about now?
