interesting because we were having a discussion about this with friends of ours. we're all non-denominational christians (go to different churches and don't each seek out a particular denomination but go where fits our families) and i was told that one couple had another couple as godparents which was interesting to me as none of us baptized our kids. none of my other friends really knew why they selected godparents as it's not really something any of our friends (with the same spiritual background) has done.

growing up catholic, i think of it as a catholic thing. my godfather is my uncle and my godmother someone i haven't seen since i was very very little, but i don't have a more special connection to my uncle because of it and we aren't particularly close.

We chose godparents as guides in life, rather than for religious reasons. Two godparents are catholic (two of DH's siblings) then we chose one of my sisters and one of my very close male friends, who I think will teach her a lot about tolerance. Guardianship was considered separately. In short, we thought each godparent had qualities that would benefit DD.

DS' godparents are my brother and one of my best friends. We chose them because we see them as spiritual leaders and people who'll provide him with guidance.

Our parents are our DS' guardians, my brother and his soon to be wife will be back-up guardians as needed.

Given that our closest friends are not very religious or spiritual that will not be a consideration or duty for our God parent picks. We will choose friends that we want to honor and bestow this title to show how important they are in our lives and hopefully will be just as close to our children too. A god parent is a role model and a person that I would trust caring for my child and giving them advice. My god mother took a special interest in me and we were very close and she was a supportive, positive adult in my life. That's what I want for my kids too- a decent parent surrogate. Our children's guardians will be immediate family.

It is religious/tradition for us, we choice family. DH's brother and sister in law for DD1, and my sister and bro in law for DD2.

We're atheist, but we used the term to refer to their legal guardians if something happened to us. It's currently a family friend, but she got divorced since we first got pregnant, so IF we can find someone better we will. Unfortunately we have zero good choices at this point. We'll probably let her keep the title though, because it means a lot to her.

We're atheists so our LO doesn't have godparents. My parents would be her guardians if we passed away.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We did choose them as a couple, we just lost touch with him after the divorce. She's my friend from way back. It's not that being divorced makes her unsuitable, just that we'd rather not basically make her a single mom if we have the option of asking a couple. She would get the insurance money, but it's still a lot of work. And she's also not ideal in several other ways, but she's so much better than our other options that we're sticking with her for now.
