    Well, we haven't named a kid yet but we will be (11wks pg). Our top concerns will be:

    - Sound with last name: we have a WEIRD last name (rhymes with "Corey") so any girls' names ending in a -ey sound basically sound like they rhyme. Our last name is also pronounced very differently than it's spelled so,

    - Traditional, easy to spell first name (since the last name is hard enough)

    - Child's future (how will this sound as Judge so and so, Dr. so and so) - my kids can choose whatever career path they like but I don't want them to be hampered by a weird name.

    - Then, how we like the name/family.

    We wanted short, classic-ish, in the middle of the pack as far as popularity. Middle name is biblical and we'll probably stick with all of those in naming lo #2. Eta: we have a really long, uncommon polish last name.

    Lots of factors, but as an Alicia who constantly has people come to my office saying they have a meeting with "Lisa" one of my major demands was a name that's not too easy to mishear.

    I love the meaning behind LO's name the most, but I also love the way it sounds, the easy spelling, and the fact that it's recognizable, yet not very common.

    So many reasons! Meaning, out of the top 100, unique, but easy to spell and pronounce (you read it like you would pronounce it without any second guessing), not made up, we liked it, passes the resume/judge test, has nickname options that we like (I love nicknames, but wanted them to have a formal first name - also nixed a few names bc we didn't like the possible nicknames assoc with a name), grandparents can easily pronounce, and they paired well together as siblings.

    It took a lot of work to find something traditional, though not terribly common (we have a super common last name) AND agreed upon by both of us. Our daughter is Gwendolyn and our son (due in April) will likely be Lyle. Both kids have/will have family names as middle names.

    @loveisstrange: ditto.

    We agreed on girl names from here to Mars. We could.not. agree on a boys name.

    It ended up being a name we could both agree on, and liked and it's a popular name but with a European spelling, so it's less common than it's American spelled counterpart.
