I am always impressed when someone solves a tough crossword puzzle. I never grew up doing them, so it's something that was beyond my comprehension for years!
I've been trying to solve them in the past few years but don't get very far... is there a secret to solving them, beyond practice practice practice?

Monday is the easiest and they get harder as the week goes on. So definitely start on Monday to get your brain in crossword gear.
When I am desperate I look for clues that might indicate a plural or a certain tense. Then at least I can put an 's' or 'ed' and it might be the push I need for the intersecting word!

@mrbee: A lot of it is just practice, getting more familiar with vocabulary and as @MsHangry: mentioned paying attention to tense helps. Also try not to get too focused on specific clues. As an example, the other day I was doing one and the clue way "rich", all I could focus on was that it had to be related to money.... the actual answer was "decadent"....lol

I always fill in the answers that have a blank in the clue first like " Clue ______" that I know for sure are correct. Once I have some letters to work with, it is much easier to fill in the rest. A lot of crossword creators use the same words over and over again so once you complete many crosswords you get an idea of which words are used often (such as the word epee).
