If you use it - do you have rules on who you add as friends? I went to a girl's house on Saturday for a good friend's bridal shower. The host of the shower friended me on Facebook. I haven't replied. I feel bad saying no but at the same time, I don't know her so why would I be her friend?

I have a FB account but haven't updated in years!
That said I still get friend requests from people I would never friend - like my mom's friend's daughter - WTH?
In your case if you never plan on seeing her again I would not accept. If she was someone you liked and might see again then why not?

I don't like to add anyone under 18. I swear, I post adult humour. I have photos from years ago that probably are just not appropriate for anyone I know under 18 to see. I made 1 exception for my husbands cousin. I have another 14 year old who's requested me sitting in my inbox because I do NOT want to add her. I don't know her well, she's related through marriage through co-habitation. So I just don't see what she (or I) would gain from being friends.
I have deleted family who don't use proper internet "etiquette".
I'm not sure what I would do in your situation. I would probably add her, see if there is potential for a friendship, if not then I would delete her after a month or so.

I joined Facebook back when it started when I was in college and accepted everyone's request. I rarely use it now, but I'm slowly un-friending people if they get annoying.
I keep my instagram account locked down. My rule for that is "Would it be weird if I got a phone call from them or vice-versa?" If the answer is yes, I don't accept them. I think I have something like 15 followers.

I'm pretty broad in who I accept-- if I know who the person is, I generally add them. Sometime I should go through and delete people I will never see again, like the random people who I was on a kickball team with 7 years ago or college or high school acquaintances
Eta I'm stricter with Instagram since I started using it just this fall, whereas I've had Facebook over 10 years

I recently completely deleted my facebook and rejoined under a new name and email address. On my new account, I have 9 friends, all of whom are people I live far away from and don't see enough, so that is how we keep in touch. On my old account, I had too many friends/acquaintences/randos, and I just couldn't deal. The breaking point was when my MIL tagged herself in a picture of my son, I assume so that all of her friends could see it. NO.

I just don't add coworkers. That's my rule.
I'm pickier about IG. I don't add family or my mom's friends. It's just mostly my happy internet bubble of photos.

I'll add people I might want to contact again for some reason, but not my little nephews (because I'm way older and it's kind of weird) or co-workers. I've stopped posting anything personal though when most people I knew dropped out of touch, so it's just a way to keep contact info for me.

I don't friend anyone under 16, I have it so that I have to review any tags in photos, and certain people can't see my posts or comment on the posts I make public. I also don't add family on IG, since it's my happy space.

I feel like I've gotten an increase in requests from strangers in the past year or so -- like people with whom I have no mutual friends. I definitely don't accept any of those people. So weird! If I've actually met someone in person, I'll probably accept.

I add anyone that wants to be friends, and don't have any security settings.
I don't have any crazies in my life that would cause me to rethink securities though
ETA: By anyone, I mean within reason. As long as we have *some* connection.

@mediagirl: Did you bond with her?... did you feel like she was someone you could be friends with? That's what would make me FB friend someone at an event like. If I didn't click (clique?) with me or there was something I didn't like about her, I definitely wouldn't FB friend her.
Though, it's different if someone friends me. I might consider approving her but put her on 'watch'. Or you can make different privacy exceptions for certain people. You could accept her friendship but limit what she can see.
I do have some coworkers (not my current boss) as FB friends.
I do have online friends that I've really bonded with over the years.
Oh, my profile is private and locked down, so random people can't snoop. As for address and contact info, I've given access to that info to a select group of friends.
I have a lot of high school friends and I'm very surprised that some I've bonded with over FB but was not very close with them IRL. It's weird how that works. So that's why I'm not too tough on my acceptance criteria. Though, you would have to say or post something pretty offensive for me to unfriend you. I do hide people for certain reasons because I still want to be friends but not enough to see what they post.

I add people I would greet if I ran into at the grocery store. If I would dodge you in the produce section you won't be added even if our lockers were next to each other in high school. I'm not that outgoing to that's a fairly high bar.

I didn't care at first. But ever since having DS, and then in recent weeks, with DH lecturing me about sharing info online, I've cut down my list to people that are friends/family and internet friends that I've met in person or talk to on a regular basis. I'm also thinking about deactivating FB altogether and just getting an e-mail chain going with friends/family who need updates on our life.
I leave my instagram as my outlet to connect with all of my internet buddies.

I don't post anything too personal, funny antidotes from the life of my two year old, some pictures, ect. SO as long as I know you I will be your friend, heck I have several HB people I'm friends with on FB, we've never met in person but I still consider them friends

My "rules" are they have to either actually be someone I see/talk to often enough to count as a friend OR I have to be interested enough in their lives to keep them on my feed. For instance I have this girl I knew in college on Facebook who I haven't actually talked to in ages, but she's now a fashion designer in Japan so her life is super interesting to see lol.
I don't add all kinds of random people. Often friends of friends will try to add me and I just ignore it.
It's not really about wanting to be private (my opinion is anything you post online might as well be public, doesn't matter if you have it behind some privacy filters), but more about not having a bunch of junk in my news feed.

@swurlygurl: Same here. I don't know of anyone nuts - so I don't really worry about it. I'm pretty much the same in real life as I am online, so it doesn't bother me if I have bosses or anything.

I accept tons of people, but have no issues unfriending if they are annoying once I add. But I also have everyone separated into groups, and I have my family in one group, my husband's family in another group, close friends in another group, work people in a small group, and acquaintances in the largest group.
I rarely post on FB but when I do, I most often have it set to just show family and "close friends". Acquaintances can only see a couple of my picture albums (family friendly stuff, like I assume HS people just want to perve what I'm up to these days so I have a select photo album for that) and everything else is blocked.

I have pretty much the same approach as @Mama Bird, and like @AmandaB8: and @swurlygurl: I'm also lucky enough to not have any weirdos or super annoying people on my list (and it's not like I've deleted those people--they just don't exist).
It's just a way for me to see what people I'm interested in are up to and get in touch every once and a while. No facebook drama here!

I don't know how else to word this but it's going to make me sound like a jerk....if I care about your daily life or am interested in how things are going for you, we're friends. If you post too often or say stupid things, I dont care how I know you, you're gone. I keep my friends list small.

I only add people that I'm actually friends with, or am interested in becoming better friends with. I regularly go through and unfriend anyone who I haven't chatted with or seen for a few months.
I have my MIL and SFIL on a restricted list as my MIL shares every.single. picture I post, including profile pictures. I want to delete her so bad but as she lives out of the country for months at a time it's how we communicate if necessary.
Since having kids I try to keep it pretty locked down, I don't want everyone seeing the pictures I post.

I will accept friend requests from ppl I know but I very rarely make a request. I have a small friends list but no photos of baby. I've asked friends and family to keep her off social media as well. I think it should be her choice if photos of her are on the internet. And once it's out there there's no taking it back.

I only add people I know on facebook. Or known fake accounts of friends. I'm pretty strict on facebook.
And on instagram I just recently went private and erased people I didn't recognize or who I wasn't also following. I feel bad but I never know who I'd an in law or a friend of an inlaw and I don't feel like messing around.

If I wouldn't stop and talk to them in the street, or if I would actively avoid them if I saw them in the street, they don't get added!
