I am planning to bake LO's 1st birthday cake/cupcakes and realized that it has been quite awhile since I baked a cake (we have't had any big occasions and we don't tend to eat cake often)
I don't have any go-to recipes and usually I just end up going online and reading reviews and making something different each time.
Do you have any favorite cake recipes? Please share!

Since DH's favorite is chocolate, I have found a go-to recipe through Smitten Kitchen. It is a bit labor intensive when I make the raspberry filling but so worth it. http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/07/you-are-owed-chocolate-cake/

@dojo: The frosting can be a little bit finicky...it really needs to be completely cooled and beaten really, really, really well or it'll separate. But it's divine. A little bit sweet but not overwhelmingly so (I'm not a big frosting person, so this is important to me).

@lovehoneybee: That's good to know! I am not big on frosting and usually end up scraping it off. Maybe I will try it out with a test cake (a good excuse for a treat :wink:)
