I'm not sure if I can comment on it because I'm not a parent yet, but I don't like it either. I would be so sad if my mom posted something like that about me on the Internet.

Well I don't call anyone names, not even when I'm at my angriest, so I can't imagine calling my baby an a**hole. Of course it might just be that I'm naive, but i've always been pretty ladylike and don't feel comfortable using bad language!

I think it's awful. We were so taken aback when my MIL called her new grandson an a**hole on the day he was born! I guess the baby's mom couldn't bring herself to say anything b/c she'd grown up cursing at her mom, but we said it was inappropriate.

Not a cool trend at all! That's your kid you're insulting!!! And it's never appropriate. That's like a hubby calling his wife a b*. No bueno!

are we talking about people who actually say, 'you're an asshole' to their kids? or like - blogs that jokingly refer to their kids as names? cause I follow some blogs that do that, but she doesn't actually say, "hey DS, you're a beep-beep."

I think people who actually insult their children - yes, I disagree with that. But I don't think it's any new behavior..I know adults older than myself that jokingly have referred to their kids as names, or even on mom blogs, I think it can be funny. I personally wouldn't hold anything against my mom if she referred to me as a little shit to my dad years ago, or something. I mean really...I know she loves me, and I definitely had my days of being one!

DH and I will jokingly say other kids are being jerks or assholes or douches :p. sometimes we say that E is a honey badger and don't give a fuck when she's being crazy, too.

I don't see an issue with telling my kid she's being a jerk and to knock it off, though, if she really IS acting out of line

@sorrycharlie: Agree. There is a BIG difference (in my opinion) between jokingly referring to your kids that way in conversation with other adults or on a mom blog and actually referring to your child that way in his/her presence. Full disclosure: I am one of those moms who does this with my friends and my husband.

I see it on blogs a lot and definitely thinks it's intended to create humor for the readers. I still don't like it, but I don't think it means any of those people are bad moms. Recently a blogger used a name like that and was surprised to get negative feedback. When I read it - I was shocked that she used the word so casually...sometimes the blogger will use it and then kind of explain themselves. It just didn't feel appropriate.

On a corollary, sometimes NICU nurses would say that D was being "naughty" if he had been crying or fussy and it made me so mad! If he's crying, he's upset or in pain, not naughty!

I would never say it to their face!!! That's absolute. But, maybe to my husband if be like "yeah our teenager is being insane...or acting like a jerk." I don't think it can ben apply to children under 12, ever! I def wouldn't write about it.
Sometimes I call my babe a little monster;) hehe again, never to his face!

we don't have kids yet, but dh and I refer to our furbabies using names all the time in a joking way. I'd never actually use bad words to a child directly, but I don't see anything wrong with joking or venting about it to friends or family. Especially before the kid is actually cognizant of their behavior enough to regulate it--like it seems more likely that I'd refer to a baby waking up in the middle of the night as a jerk--because obviously they can't help that and therefore I wouldn't actually think the baby is a jerk!-- than to refer to a 7 year old throwing a tantrum as one, bc by that age they should know better, so calling them a jerk is a more serious accusation.

Wow! I've never come across anyone calling their kids that IRL or online! Sad...

This isn't aimed at any one poster, but just further clarifying my response - I don't want anyone thinkin' I'm all witchy and trashy, lol!

I also have to point out that I think this could be in danger of kind of sliding into the whole mommy wars thing...judging other parents based on a single word or phrase. Just because a parent says something like that in a joking manner doesn't make them a bad parent at all. It doesn't make them trashy. It doesn't mean they don't love their children.

In my personal experience, my parents were the BEST parents I could have asked for. In fact, they were - and are - better parents than a loooot of parents I see today. They never name called to our faces, or even as far as I know, behind our backs.

But my point was simply if my mom had ever been frustrated with my antics and complained to someone, I would not have held it against her. I think there would be only so many times I could hear, "I hate you! I wish you aborted me!" and not need to vent to someone. Yeah, I was a gem sometimes. Ha.

If I grew up with her constantly calling me names to my face, that is different (in my opinion). I do not agree with that.

Like @pui we call our dog a "jerk" but I'm pretty sure he is not fluent in English so I don't worry about it. I would probably joke like this privately before LO could understand, but I wouldn't post anything publicly, or say it to our LO once they know what the word means.

I wouldn't call my 10 year old a jerk or a-hole to his/her face or post it on the internet but saying it in a joking way to a baby or to other adults seems fine to me. Now, grabbing a baby and screaming "SHUT THE EFF UP YOU A-HOLE" is inappropriate but I think we can all agree on that lol.

I think name calling is just over the line, period, honestly. Don't do it to my husband, my friends, to anyone. I'm all about labeling behavior, not the person. My toddler literally just started throwing tantrums, and it has been as awful as you might expect. I've been griping all over facebook about it. But I would just never call her a jerk. Ever. I say that her behavior is making me nutso, sure. I say that I am really not having fun when she's screaming at me. But to say that SHE is a jerk when she's really just doing something totally developmentally normal (though totally annoying) is to label her really unfairly, imho.

Now a teenager is totally different. Teenagers can be huge jerks. I sure was. But I'd still try to refrain from name calling to anyone but my husband.

I don't know anyone in real life or on my Facebook feed that does this!
